Flat iron for new growth

Okay ladies. I have owned a HAI for about 2 years, maybe more. It is awesome for straightening my hair. But, it doesn't get as close as I would like it to, for my new growth. I am 3 months post, I used it today, and it got really straight. But that first half inch or so is still really wavy.

I just bought a Maxiglide and tried that on a section, just to test it. And it is hard to work with. I'm so used to holding my HAI's tight so that I can get my hair nice and straight, and you're supposed to do the opposite with the Maxiglide.

I looked into the Sedu, but users say the cover gets really hot. And like I said, I'm used to holding my flat irons tight to straighten well. I won't be able to use two hands with the Sedu if it gets too hot. Then I started researching the Solia, and it received pretty good reviews.

So ladies, as you can see, I need help deciding on a flat iron. I'm I being unrealistic expecting a flat iron to get my hair perm straight?? Basically, I think that's what I'm expecting. Or is there a flat iron out there that will get really close to my scalp to get ALL of my new growth?? What about the Miniglide?? Will that get closer than the Maxi, and work just as well??

In my experience, getting "perm straight" new growth has been all about who was flat ironing my hair. I rarely am able to achieve hair that straight, but a stylist usually can with a CHI or a stove iron (the devil!).

I did want to add that Sylver2 uses a Maxiglide on her 10+ week post relaxer hair, and her new growth is BONE straight...I'm talkin' fresh touch up straight. You might want to ask her about the technique she uses for getting her roots straight.

I had this same inquiry when I was looking into a flat iron as I don't always want to flat iron my whole head and want to SOLELY get the newgrowth. So I looked into small irons. I ended up not buying one b/c I rarely heat style and mostly bun, but you can check out the

Hai Twig (it's very very small) or the miniglide. HTH. :)

I've read on another hair forum that the Solia is pretty good at getting at your roots because the outside doesn't heat up like the Sedu.

When I used the maxiglide, I was able to get my hair relaxer straight at the roots. I just made sure to start the iron all the way at my roots and follow the directions exactly as in the dvd player.

See, and that's where I got the idea from. When I saw her fotki, I started considering the Maxiglide right then. And I wasn't sure if her hair was soo straight from the Maxiglide, blowdrying, or air drying w/ the scarf method. After emailing her, she gave me her regimen. She uses the blowdryer.

Okay. I tried it again today. I washed, air dried, and flat ironed. I started off with the maxiglide, and I just didn't like the results. I guess I have to get used to operating it, but for $70, I don't want my first dozen uses to be practice. So it'll be going back.

I finished with my HAI, and it was MUCH better this time. I took my time and was able to get my roots really well. It doesn't feel like I JUST got a relaxer, but it feels like I got one about 3 weeks ago. That's a lot better than 3 months of new growth. And because it wasn't completely straight, my hair is still kind of thick at the roots. Which make it look poofy.

I'm still interested in trying a smaller iron though, to see if it will work any better or get any closer to my roots. Someone recommended the HAI Twig. I'm also looking into the Solio 3/4 inch. Although I really want the 1 inch PINK one. The Sedu doesn't have one smaller than 1 in. Oh, and today when I flat ironed, I also realized that the cover of my HAI gets really hot, too. I was able to hold it for a second, but not long at all. So maybe I don't need two hands to flat iron.

I think there are two tricks to getting your newgrowth straight when flat ironing.

1. the thinnner the iron the better. those big bulky irons really don't get too close to the scalp.

2. pull on the hair piece that you are flat ironing a little. it sounds damaging but it's not. it you don't pull too hard you should be good.

Yeah. That's what I did when I got it straight yesterday. I'm not going to buy a smaller iron just yet. I'm on the Hide Your Hair Challenge, so I won't be wearing my hair down until after Christmas anyway. I have to get control of my PJism and impulsive buying!!!:ohwell:
