If you made up your mind you were gonna get braid as your protective style.... would you liklely get individuals or crotchet? I've had both and really love them! But I'm getting a little scared about the individuals on my fine edges (as I've been pampering the hell outta them!:D ). Give a little feedback sistas.:)

I currently have micro braids which are fine as long as you don't keep pulling on them causing hairline breakage. My suggestion is individuals simply because I think crochets are not very modern to me.

I would go for individuals. Have you ever looked at www.growafrohairlong.com? She has a braid regimen that I use on my daughter and the pencil sized individuals she recommends are just the right size to promote growth & prevent damage. Good luck!

I think I've had every size braid EXCEPT micro. I'm 2 lazy to take down all those little braids, plus it seems like build up at the base would be more damaging with that type.

It's funny that you think crotchet aren't modern, cause the new modern name for them is "lace braids". i guess cuz essentially that's what they're doing...."lacing" the synthetic hair through the cornrow.:look: I liked them because the cornrows are less concentrated tension and the style allows me to conceal my fine edges (they don't get braided) and continue to baby them. PLUS washing, DC, and oiling is a breeze (vertical rows)!;)

I have STUDIED this site extensively and others. That's why I have such a dilemna. The results from her system were AWESOME! But is it RIGHT for ladies with fine or thin edges? What modifications would have to be made?

Well, i'm always in some sort of braid or another. At the moment i've got chunky individual braids but i got them to do the edges lighter and i've taken the front out and redone them twice (they got looser or grew:look: ) so it doesn't pull and everything seems fine. Infact my hairline seems to have grown in thicker and longer so now it all goes into the braid :) HTH

Explain to me what you had done, please. Are those braids smaller?

I, too, had been thinking about getting braids for the summer as a protective style. I had them for a couple of years when I was in graduate school. They were great because I didn't have to do anything to my hair and my hair did grow. However, each time I took them out, I always had to get a couple of inches cut and my hair, although longer, looked weighed down and stressed out. My edges are the hardest part. I've always had thin edges and would ask the braider not to braid them tightly. Without fail, my hair would thin out even more no matter what I did. So I've come to the conclusion that I'd like to nurse my hair and edges back to health before I put any stress on it. We fine-haired ladies are at a disadvantage because we have to work harder to treat our delicate strands with tender loving care.

I haven't found the edges to be a dilemna, if anything my daughters hair has gotten thicker. Have you watched her braid video?

I think that breakage around the edges is from putting the braids in too tight.
