I have to so much as put a comb through (untangled!!!) hair and whole bunch of strands appear on the comb :nono:

I am at loss as to what's wrong. Before I came on LHCF it didn't bother me, I thought I have enough hair what will the loss of a few strands do. But now it really bothers me.

What scares is that I take a really small section of hair, and comb it, and alot of hair appears on the comb. Multiply that for the entire head, times the number of times that I comb it (2/3 times a week).

Do I need to stop combing? Wash the hair once a week, comb it, and leave it alone till next wash day?

hi Spongebob....what's your reggie? more specifically, how's your protein/moisture balance?

hi coyacoy I wash my hair on sundays with pantene anti breakage shampoo, follow it with pantene anti breakage conditioner (detangle), towel dry, then whilst the hair is still a bit moist and hence more managable i apply frizz ease night serum, leave it over night. next day either in the morning or afternoon I apply jojoba oil (used to apply olive but was told this can dry hair out so switched to jojoba oil).

all of this on sunday evening-monday morning. Then through the rest of the week I just comb it when it looks messy, otherwise I leave it alone. throughout the week my hair stays relatively untangled, but when i comb it I see a lot of hair on the comb. I'm trying to figure out whether it looks a lot because the strands are long, or whether there is actually a lot of hair loss. I don't know

I have very very fine strands... I use a comb maybe 4x a year. :look: (I finger detangle, wash and air dry in sections; it really works for me.)

IMO, you are combing/manipulating too much which is leading to excessive breakage and shedding. Do you like protective styles? If your hair is 'put away', there is no need to comb.

ETA: I don't have any experience with Pantene as a natural, but I don't believe their products are very moisturizing. The anti-breakage line is probably laden with protein, which needs to be balanced with pure moisture. If not, your strands will snap, crackle, and pop!

Thanks for the deets @Spongebob......a few things come to mind as suggestions for you in terms of how you can 1) determine whether you are experencing hair shedding, breakage or loss and 2) thoughts on what you can do to get it under control

1) examine the strands that you are losing in good light - see whether there is a white bulb at the end that came out of your scalp.....if there is then that is a shed hair - if not, it's breakage. span down the length of the strand to see whether there are any bubbles or "gaps" where it literally looks like the hair is seperatng from itself - finally look at the other end of the hair to see whether it is a split end. your remedy should be contingent on these findings
**as a side, consider posting a pic of the hair loss amount - this might allow for others to weigh in with comparisons

2) if its shedding (you see the white bulbs; and the rest of the strand appears to be healthy and strong) then try a garlic condish (alter ego is a good one) and that should help get the shedding under control - there are several reviews and a thread or two on alter ego and its benefits

if its breakage - examine your protein / moisture balance. gaps or bubbles generally imply that more protein is needed. in that instance, try a protein treatment followed by a moisturizing DC. also, have you tried using a leave in condish before sealing? that may help to keep hair moisturized and strong. I'm not too familiar w/pantene products, so i'm not sure what the protein/moisture content is like. you may want to try exploring other shampoos and condishes -

split ends might be caused by dryness, or over or rough manipulation. if split ends are the case - consider a trim (not sure how often you do so currently) and then baby your ends. start deep conditioning regularly - i suggest once a week. make sure you are paying special attention to your ends and sealing them. PS'ing a few days a week would prol help here as well along with sleeping with a satin cap if you aren't already

HTH - not everything is for everybody, so the main message is to pay attention to your hair and respond to what its unique needs are. Good luck, OP!!:yep: I'm sure the other ladies will weigh in with great knowledge and tips!! Hang in there - your hair is beautiful!!

Agree! Thanks, NappyNelle - i knew i felt some kind of way about that line, but couldn't quite articulate it - thanks - well stated!!:yep:

Spongebob, It doesn't look like your hair is getting enough moisture and like NappyNelle stated, there is probably protein in the Pantene Anti-Breakage line. If you want to continue to use the line, then you must add more moisture to your routine. I would suggest deep conditioning with a moisturizing conditioner after using those products or at least using a moisturizing leave in before you use your Frizz Ease Serum.

I have fine hair and I only use a comb on wash days. My hair is fragile so I mostly detangle with my fingers.
