yay! i finally got my yarn braids done. i love them! they're soft. they hold moisture well, have a cool matte finish, and they allow my hair to be pampered, protected and grow. and best of all i did them all by myself:grin: i'll redo them every 2 months, off & on, during '07.

they are a staple of my hair growth regime. i give mad thanks to my cuz who taught me how to braid way back in the 90's. she needed help putting her extentions in, so she figured since i was a boy-who-was-nuts-about-hair already, i might as well help her hook up her do

i plan on using them this year to grow out my hair once more ... i'd be near waist length now if i didn't color it, texturixe it, and then shave it bald last year:D

tkj step away from the chemicals :hammer: :swearing: :naughty: :naughty: :fishslap: :whip:

i can always grow long hair, but then (usually around 15+ inches) i get bored & experimental, and end up jacking it up on a whim ... but you know what, it'll grow back. i just have to be patient & make better, healthier choices. i really do love my natural hair though. my hair does best when i keep it simple -- no chemicals, no heat, lots of cqc -- consistent, quality, care :rosebud:

braids really help me during the in-between stages, especially during those first two years -- when i'm anxious for long hair today ... so i'm gonna rock these shoulder-skimming-yarn-mugs now, even if i'll have to wait another two years to enjoy the real thing:)

Beautiful smile!

ETA: Ladies, go to his profile and copy and paste his link address to view the pics.

thanks sexysin985 & hidden_angel for the help with the link. i also had to make the photos public -- they defaulted to private. so you all should be able to see them now.:)

and thanks for the compliments poobity & hidden_angel. you are too sweet.

Okay, for those of you who can't see it, click on his name and you will be able to see the pictures that way.

Those braids look really wonderful and light. I am hoping to do this with my hair as a protective style this time.

What did you do to keep the ends closed?

I want yarn braids sooo bad but my hairs not jet black so the yarn does not match my hair

Is there anyone one with off black/dark brown hair that has had yarn braids?
Did you use black yarn?
Did it blend well?
Do thet have dark, dark brown yarn?

Aw, your welcome! I just love fros on guys they look so cute in them!

Ur hair looks good!
growing really nicely.

i like the yarn braids on u:yep:

didn't know we had any guys on here growing...

mscocoface i just burn/pinch/roll the ends just like you do synthetic hair/kanekalon, toyokalon. i like yarn better though because of the feel, the moisture retention, and it doesn't catch on my shirts:D . i used to get those fuzzy balls all the time on the back & shoulders of my shirts:lol:

Very nice.

Your hair is fabulous. I loe looking through your pictures at your journey. Great job!!!!

Wow, they look fabulous!!!!!!!! Can you explain how you start the braid?

This is also my dilemma. I want to try the yarn braids sooo badly but black hair will make me like gothic. The only brown colors that I've found are Crayola crayon brown which will not go with my hair color, Maybe the yarn can be dyed with hair dye or fabric dye:perplexed . If I don't find any suitable colors, I will experiment with dying the yarn.

thanks xxxtacy. it has been a true journey. i've made plenty of mistakes along the way, but have learned a lot in the process:) this site is a great resource. there is just a wealth of knowledge, experience, community, and a sense of welcoming, which i love.

zora for these braids i first twisted my own natural hair in two-strand twists. i then added yarn to each individual twist to make the braid. this saves me time in having to section/detangle/part my hair, because the uniform parts from the twists are already there as a guide. otherwise you can just section/part your hair like you do for individual braids.

jtsupanova, pattycake0701,

that is one of the drawbacks to yarn braids -- the limited color selection. basically black or brown. i did my friends hair in college and he was bold enough to use this reddish brown yarn with his dark brown/black hair. he pulled it off though, because he had a big personality like that, and could care less what people thought of his waist-length reddish brown braids:lol:

i love black hair, so i don't mind dying my hair black to better match the yarn. my hair is naturally dark brown, but has subtle reddish highlights in sunlight. i'm planning on switching to a henna/indigo mix to dye it black once it grows out a little more. i too have wondered about dying yarn to match your hair color -- after all it comes manufactured in a rainbow of colors ... but i don't know how well the color would hold doing it on your own? or what the dyeing process would entail?

THis is really beautiful! Great smile too! I'm getting braids in a few weeks and I may try this, it's different. Do you have problems with tangling etc? How do you care for this hair? TIA

thanks lmjenk67, angie10, and alli77,

i don't experience any tangling with yarn braids. that's one of the reasons i switched from synthetic braids. i also like the fact that yarn braids don't get fuzzy, scratchy (especially on thge ends) in fact they look better -- more like locs -- as they age. plus the fact that it's a soft, natural fiber and feels like more like my natural hair.

as for care, i make sure not to put them in too tight. i redo them about every 2 months. i no-poo them once a week. i then apply a moisturising spray & leave in conditioners. i spray my braids every other day. and that's it. when i take my braids down, my hair is still moist, damp to the touch. yarn braids are a great, protective, hair-growing style -- a true staple for me.
