It feels SO good to be able to post on here! I've lurked around this board for a while as sort of a silent observer, but there was just SO much great information and so many questions I had that I knew a subscription was in order! :). There is a question I have. I've been living in a perm since I was 14 years old and have seen my hair decrease in length ever since. Now, not counting the cut I had to get due to a bad stylist (she cut my hair REALLY uneven) and a recent cut I did in October of last year (I was feeling a little daring lol), my hair is quite healthy and breakage seems only to plague me if I don't take care of it. I am now at the stage in my life where my hair has been at almost every length and I realize I enjoy it long! I read the starter guide on here and bought a few products already, however I have a question regarding relaxers. I don't have any desire to give up my relaxer because I DO like the ease that comes with styling it, however I see women in salons ALL the time with perms whose hair has suffered SIGNIFICANT damage, almost to the point of baldness. Now, there's nothing wrong with being bald if that's what someone prefers, but I don't want to back myself against a wall with no way out. I really want to grow my hair to waist length, but I'm starting to wonder if that's even possible with a relaxer? So many people have stated that the chemicals are intense and can cause breakage. Does this mean that reaching my goal will only be significantly harder, or impossible to reach at all? I've done well this year though, only two touchups to date (I stretched for 7 months so that helped) and I'm hoping to hold out until December to keep my relaxer count at 3 times this year. ANY advice or help that you all could give would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

Just wanted to say welcome! I'm no longer relaxed, however this board has tons of lovely relaxed ladies who can offer up some advice regarding breakage. You may also be interested in Texlaxing as well, if you hair type doesnt do well with a reg relaxing :)

but i think it just takes a lot more effort.

Welcome. I had BC'd with the intention of being natural indefinitely. But as I started reading books and coming here, I changed my mind and relaxed, because there is a wealth of healthy relaxed heads here with lots of length.

Congrats on the long stretches.
