how do you all maneuver those little rubberbands around your hair in a way that its both comfortable and secure??

when i flat twist the front of my hair and i want to put a rubber band around it and leave the ends out with the rest of the back, whenever i put the band on, it feels like its so tight! and its so uncomfortable....but if i do it looser, then the flat twist doesnt really stay right...

whats the secret?

I've heard some people slide in a bobby pin parallel to the flattwist, just below the twist at the end. I still don't know how to do a flattwist though!
