I don't think I've seen a discussion like this post the "no oils no butters" campaign.

Over my hair journey, I've used a lot of different raw oils and butters, but these days I keep it fairly simple and use either my DIY ayurvedic infusion (I forget which oils are in it) or deoderized beef tallow which is still my favourite hair oil for sealing my hair. Shout outs go to sweet almond oil, macadamia nut oil, and hazel nut oil, which alone or together are great for my hair and skin.

I also like to pre-poo with babassu oil.

I prefer slightly greasy oils and I stay heavy handed. While I've experienced build up, every-so-often, I'm not sure that I've experienced the exclusionary build up people warn you about.

What are your favourite oils and butters?

I have a few favorites:
  • Ostrich Oil: I use this from the strands on my head to the cuticles of my feet. It works on every inch of my body. I started using this post-chemical peel, and it works extremely well to nourish the skin and support it while peeling. It works fantastically on everything else, too, though. I just love it. It's expensive though.
  • Emu Oil: slightly less expensive than Ostrich oil. Works similarly to Ostrich oil.
  • Lwil Maskriti more commonly known as "Haitian Black Castor Oil": This 'Hea-uh' is the absolute truth! Not only can I use this to the abandon of every other oil, I can ingest it for benefits. People love Jamaican black castor oil, and that's cool, but I have always found Haitian black castor oil to be better for me. My very first boyfriend as a teenager was Haitian, and many people of their culture use this item for many things. Once I began using it, I saw why. It actually works fantastically on everything. From every inch of my body to ingesting it. I spend a couple of hundred dollars and buy it in gallon or half-gallon sizes at a time. Liquid gold indeed! It is very thick and sticky, but I slather it on and let it absorb. It has an earthy smoky smell. That scent doesn't bother me at all.
  • Safflower oil: My hair loves this stuff. It is rich in ceramides which my hair loves.
  • Grapeseed oil: Also rich in ceramides and my hair loves it.
  • Shea Butter: The original hair butter my hair loves. Easy to find and use. Relatively cheap.
  • Avocado butter and oil: My hair and skin love it
There are many, many, many more oils that I use regularly and love, but the list above is what I ALWAYS keep in my supply, immediately replenish as soon as I run out, and more often than not have an abundance of to prevent running out of. Every now and then my husband will dip into my stash and I will overestimate my suppy and run out, but I try to keep these in my supply at all times.

Love this thread! I'll be reading to learn: I don't know much about oils and butters

At the moment, I like/love:

- castor oil (when this is in a product that is well-formulated, my hair seems to love it!)

- coconut oil (I cook with it, but people keep telling me I need to moisturize my feet with it)
- avocado oil (I cook with it)
- EVOO (extra virgin olive oil . . . I make salad dressing, mayonnaise, etc. with it; I used to use it in my DIY hair products)

@Lylddlebit, you got me feeling like I need to try some ostrich, emu, and black Haitian castor oil! Lol

@Yvette 2.0 don't mind me. I am an unapologetic-use-all-my-stuff-instead-of-decluttering product junkie. I will have you spending all your money lol.:lachen:
