I'm about to do a weave- either a full head or invisible part one. Does anyone add extra hair to the braids for the base? I'm thinking it may look too bulky, but my cornrows start to get really loose after a few washes.
Youtube tutorials would be GREAT. Thanks x

Just took down my neighbor's sew-in last night, and the stylist that did her's added small pieces of synthetic hair to the braids since her hair is so soft, and the extensions gave a better hold to the thread. She didn't have any damage, and she had a full-head sew-in weave.

ETA: It didn't look bulky...the synthetic hair was braided into the perimeter braids only, like around the front edges and the nape.

I have seen my friend add hair to the braids when doing sew ins. She stated that it helps the braids hold better.

Please be careful adding synthetic hair to your braids. If you must, just be sure to soak them in vinegar & water prior to braiding. The coating on the hair can cause allergic reactions, such as sever itching and/or soreness.

Dang it! I just read the other day to avoid using synthetic hair in the braids. I thought it helps to re-enforce, but they also claim it can cause damage to hair. If I find the article and reason I will post. I did once, didn't notice anything. Usually if hair is about SL, hair is not added to braids so it won't be so bulky.

i think if your hair is thin or even fragile then syn hair added is a good technique since it provides a good hold/base...

it is a valid point that you have to see if your scalp is allergic to syn hair- some ppl do exp itching...

and also i say one should oil down/moisturize the syn hair b4 adding it in since syn hair can dry out your hair...

My hair is naturally bulky so I don't use extension hair for the weave base. I did wear synthetic cornrow extensions back in the day and my hair did well in them. I'm not allergic to kanekelon but it doesn't hurt to wash the hair first. I'm always more comfortable when I wash extension hair before installing it.

My hairdresser adds a little amount of synthetic hair to the cornrows and my weaves have never been bulky. TBH I have never asked her why she does it.

Thanks for this information! Someone told my friend something along the same lines and she asked me about it but I had no answer for her.

I sometimes wash the hair prior to applying, however it doesn't seem to break me out if I don't. I have never experienced damage with fake hair in braids before, so I don't thinl it will be an issue. Plus I will be braiding and installing it- I trust no one!
