First of all, I am natural. I have extremely, thick and coarse hair that is somewhere between bra-strap and waist length. Before I shampoo, I mix $ store or suave conditioner with any type of oil to help detangle my hair. I am able to easily comb my hair and wash without tangles when I precondition my hair. If I don't, I am tempted to get a scissors and cut my hair off. Preconditioning makes the washing process quite pleasurable.

I don't know if this will answer your question but I do a pre-treatment before every shampoo on slightly damp hair. I mix olive, jojoba and castor oils with a little dollop of honey. I warm it up in the microwave and apply. I put a plastic cap over my hair and wrap with a towel. I leave this mixture on of a minimum of 30 mins.

This is my version of a hot oil treatment. I do this because I have psariosis (sp?) around my hair line and it helps lift any flakes I may have so my scalp gets clean. I also do this because I shampoo twice a week and it keeps the shampoo from stripping my scalp of the natural oils.

I usually use oils for pre-shampoos and I've found that they wash out better when I apply them to dry hair as opposed to wet hair.

I precondition mainly for detangling purposes if I'm just using a conditioner with no add ins because my hair is natural and the conditioner helps with brushing... otherwise its oils and conditioners that i'm using when I feel like my hair is dry and needs something extra
