or should i say STANKS! It smells like throw up. I have the jungle brand from whole foods. When I first got it it smelles like coconuts now it smells like spoiled throw up. I thought it was spoiled but I saw that it doesn't need refrigeration and it doesn't have an expiration on it. WTH happened to it? Has this happened to anyone else? PEEEE UUUUUU

I believe coconut oil has a shelf life of two years, especially if it is unrefined. And this shelf life is only applicable if kept at room temperature or lower, so if you keep it somewhere warm that could cause it to spoil faster. Whatever you do, don't use it. I would take it back to the store where you bought it...

Well i got it from Whole Foods Months ago. DO you think they will take it? TOO late I Pre co washed my hair with Bananas and coconut milk and the oil. My hair came out FAB but I didnt mash the nanas up very well so they got stuck in my hair and I first poo'd with Creamy aloe then I used Kinky curly come clean and some baking soda and there is still nanas in my hair. I said forget it and then I applied lots of the stank coconut oil and and it made my hair feel dry so I used my spritz and threw on my shower cap and bonnet and this oil STILL STINKS. If it has a shelf like of two years it's two years has come and it STANKS! I was reading a thread on another website and alot of of other people had experienced this stinky smell too but no one knew why. Thanks for the info I will probably be taking a trip to Whole Foods today.

Extra Virgin Coconut oil can have this smell. It is the natural smell of the oil. Some people hate the smell, including myself, and others can deal with it.. If you want something practically odorless I would go with Virgin Coconut oil.

OHHHHH I knew something was different about my oil. I think it is EV. The last coconut oil I got from GNC and it stunk but it always smelled the same. When I first got this oil it smelled good..like coocnuts..now it just smells spoiled. Seriously. That's why I was a little worried because it went from one smell to the next.

Maybe I will call whole foods before I show up with a stankin jar of coconut oil. And my cocnut oil has been through it all. Being in a hot car to being in a cold room. So maybe this did cause it to spoil. Shoot with the heat out here it could be sitting in the room(our AC went out for awhile) and melt all the way. I am sure this must have contributed to something. My oil from GNC used to do the same but it always smelled the same...*shrugs* I don't know.

That does not sound right. I think yours is actually spoiled, especially since you said it's been in a hot car and everywhere else. Get a new one and from now on, keep it somewhere cool and don't let it go through any extreme temperature changes.

It actually doesn't matter if it's extra virgin or virgin, because technically there's no such thing as "extra" virgin coconut oil, that's just a marketing thing. But, some brands do smell more like coconuts than others. I've tried a few different ones though, and none of them have smelled bad, even after years.

I think it has to do with how much of the coconut solids are left in the oil. The coconut oil I have smells like nothing. I just got it in the organic aisle of my grocers. I love that its unscented, because then it doesn't clash with other scents in the things I mix it with- I get to choose.

Which grocers did you get yours from? Ahh well bye bye coconut oil. I have to wash my hair before I leave the house too cause it STANKS!! I am just holding off cause I don't know exactly what to do with it.

In my case it was Meijer which is like a Super Walmart, but they are only mid-western to my knowledge. I have also seen it in another grocer by the cooking oils (veggie, canola, etc.). We don't have a Whole Foods in town, and I'm too lazy to make the trek to one, so I find what I can in town.

I don't think that's normal...

I use extra virgin coconut and it smells faintly of coconut. Very nice, sweet, light smell that almost isn't there.

I use Nutiva brand and I got it from the vitamin shoppe.

I got mines from the indian store in a tall cylinder jar with yellow writing on it, and it said just plain "Coconut Oil", I don't know and don't care if it's extra virgin or virgin, but it works great for my hair and it doesn't smell funny to me.

Yea, that happened to me and I threw it away. It could be spoiled. I wonder if it can be bacteria buildup?

I think it could be from it being left out too long in heat, I brought some "EVCC" from Whole Foods and it started smelling really sour, the coconut pieces even turned brown :perplexed. I know how that I should've just thrown it out, but instead I just mixed it with some DC.

Very true, I didn't even think about that. :yep:

Before you disregard it, I would purchase another one of the same brand and compare the scents. Maybe that is the usual scent that you are just not use to. Some members of this site think castor oil stinks, while I dont smell anything. If the scents are different then I would return it to the store and inform the manager.

I already know there is a difference in the smell BECAUSE the first time I opened it I noted the pleasent coconut smell as opposed to the one I had gotten from GNC. I noticed other things like the oil from GNC really detangled my hair while this one didn't. I also didn't like the way this one felt on my skin BUT it smelled better. It never smelled like this before. It's has to be spoiled.

i've used several different brands of coconut oil and the only one that stank was spectrum brand. i never used it again but my emerald and vitamin shoppe brand smell like coconuts. i agree with msa.

i love the emerald laboratory brand from gnc. it is soooo silky and feels so smooth compared to the other brands i have used. the smell is also better imo.

What if the coconut oil is odorless...or smells kinda like wax? Caan it still be virgin?
