This winter my hair has really been breaking. I'm sitting in my bed right now cutting so many splits/mid splits that extend as far as an inch up in a S&D session. I had my hair trimmed at a salon early Jan. My hair was blow dried and then I heard several snips and I was done?:perplexed Normally my hair is straightened fully or at least cut more precisely. I have really old color on my ends and my hair is growing longer. Could that be it? I also travel/live btw NYC and Houston. I believe the water is harder and Htown and I was just there for 2 months. I honestly think I am going to have to go in and have a really goOd trim. I'm most likely going to wig/weave it up for the next 3 months as well like I originally planned to do.

i'm no hair guru, but your concerns definitely resonate with me. when i moved overseas, i had red hair. but found that the dry conditions+hard water= major damage. i did a trim to remove all of the damage--and I'm glad i did. once the damaged part was gone, my hair felt better and I knew i did the right thing. then i did PS (wore wigs) for about 4 months, and it paid off.

also, i try my best to limit my exposure to the hard water. if i need to moisturize/style, i keep a spray bottle with drinking water and make sure to clarify my hair.

hope some of that was helpful.

OP, what's your reggie? I'm sure the ladies on the board can offer up some guidance, but we'll need to know more about your regimen, products, etc. to help

First you'll need to trim your hair, S&D, or however you feel is the best way for you to cut out the splits. The next thing you need to do, which I think is most important, is to increase your deep conditioning to restore moisture to your hair. You hair is probably breaking because it's 1). color treated, 2). being exposed to winter weather hence the dryness and eventual breakage. The more often you deep condition (I recommend once a week with heat if possible) the better off your hair will be.

You should definitely treat the main issues before just hiding your hair under a weave which will only further exacerbate the problem. Try to get your hair to a better state before putting in the weave. HTH.

I went to an NYC stylist for a consultation this past Friday, and I think I know what may be the problem. I have thick, dense hair and I stopped DCing with heat/steam a few moths ago, which is the time my hair started feeling dry and looking frizzy. After examining my ends and my hair, she said it wasn't in bad shape but it was CRAZY dry! She basically recommended what I was doing a few months ago: go back to DCing with heat, and basically moisturizing the heck outta my hair. After just one steam treatment I already see the difference!
