This comes from an interview she did with AOL Black Voices.

BV: Hair extensions have traditionally been viewed as a black trend, but lately a lot of young white stars are wearing them. Why is that?
EL: Actually that's not true. White women have always worn extensions, it just wasn't widely known. I've done Farrah Fawcett's hair before and others. And they've been wearing them a long time. But the younger generation is talking about it more and making it known.

The difference is that more black women wore "Weaves" not extensions, which are entirely different. Extensions are definitely more expensive and just in recent years have even been promoted to black customers.

My theory is that years ago some did wear weaves BUT they made an effort to make them look natural. Now a days I see weaves and no one makes an attempt to make them look natural. That is what looks horrible. Kool Aid colored weaves and cockatail sprouts. A few bad weaves spoil the whole bunch. It's like some people wear them as decoration instead of adornment.

Weave and extensions are the same thing. There is no difference. It's all false hair added to your own hair. Why do people always try to make distinctions for white people? It's all the same. Yes, there are different methods of applying extensions to peoples hair, but which method is used is determined by a number of different factors, not what race the person is. There's a thread over in the Entertainment/Celebs forum now showing Pam Anderson with a bad weave. You can see a track in one of the pictures.

you are correct. They are the same thing. It is amazing what the media does to make things appear separate.

Oh yeah, I forgot braids too. Braids (with hair added) are extensions too. But they don't carry the same stigma that weaves do. But don't get me started on that topic because that's a whole other issue in itself...

I remember when I visited this salon last November to see Marcia there were like 3 white women getting extensions/weaves.

You know, I didn't think of it like that. You are right. I have had both and I guess what I was looking at was the process and the popularity of it among the people who wore them. Yes it is adding other hair to your own when it boils right down to it. The salon I went to only did extensions and the women were of all races who got them. Economically speaking, this salon only targets affluent clients who will pay for extensions. They could do weaves just as easily , but I guess by them not being as expensive, it makes it seem as if they are not as exclusive as they want to appear to be.
