When the roots would get wavy. Im a 4a\3c with fine hair sometimes I would only touch up when I felt like it after about 6 mos. This is before I was on the boards or even knew about stretching I could get my hair very straight just by wrapping then flat ironing so sometimes quite a bit of time would pass before I relaxed again.
I used to get touchups every 4 months when I lived in Florida. The new growth at the hairline would get frizzy/fuzzy looking by month 3 or thereabouts. Otherwise, my hair used to get quite straight with roller setting.
When I moved to lower-humidity Europe, I relaxed once a year - in the summer - as my hair frizzed up less.
That's one of the reasons I stopped relaxing (I only did it twice though ). I couldn't really see any difference between the new growth and the relaxed hair and it still took me 45 mins-1 hour to straighten it after washing.
It was pointless to me...
