It really all depends on the reason for your dry hair.
For ex.: if your hair is dry because it is very porous and so whatever moisture you put in is quickly leaving, then you may need to shore up the cuticles with a decent protein conditioner first before you try another moisturizing product. On the other hand, if your hair is like mine (i.e.: just needed a better quality moisturizing conditioner) then my method for curing my dry hair was amping up my deep conditioning. i DC w/ a moisturizing cond 1 - 2x per week. A lot of ladies on here like to DC on dry hair because your hair's supposed to suck up the DC more rather than it already being soaked with water after shampooing. I tried that but DCing on towel dried/slightly damp hair w/heating cap over plastic cap seems to work better for me-- likely b/c of the steam that bit of water produces.
As for my product of choice-- Kenra's been doing me right. I use either the moisturizing conditioner or the platinum color care shea butter reconstructor (which is moisturizing and not a protein conditioner despite the word reconstructor in it).
you gotta figure out why your hair is dry though... there are other reasons for dry hair (your relaxer, your shampoo ingredients, your daily moisturizer, what you seal in your moisturizer with, etc...)
My remedy for dry hair syndrome is to moisturize 2xs a day with SheaMoisture Shea Butter Leave in conditioner and seal with coconut oil. I prepoo with a conditioner, coconut milk and coconut oil. I DC 2xs a week and do a CW 1x a week and shampoo 1x a week with a moisturizing shampoo.
For me it was to stop using shampoos and use a good quality conditioner and a good quality leave in. The cheaper stuff just don't work for my hair and I also learned that less is more. But I am looking for a new Nourishing Moisturizing Leave In. Good Luck!
What got rid of my extreme case of dry hair was stopping the use of shampoo's, deep conditioning over night and roller setting as opposed to air drying or blowdrying.
I also had to find products that worked with my hair. My favorite product lines are WEN, Jessicurl, Ojon and Jane Carter.
well i still use shampoo because in my opinion not getting rid of the residue on your hair is not going to allow your hair to absorb more product (and moisture). I use a quality shampoo and conditioner like Kenra Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. I also prepoo with Aubrey Organics GPB or Island Naturals. Every few weeks I also clarify with Kenra Clarifying Shampoo to give my hair that fresh start. I moisturize nightly with Qhemet Burdock Root Cream and use Boundless Tresses on my scalp and to seal. Every once in a while I will blowdry and/or flatiron and my hair is still beautiful. However, most of the time I airdry my hair in a wrap under a scarf because I dont have access to my Pibbs right now (I'm in college).
