Hello ladies. So I have been completely natural since december 26, 2008. I've always had an issue with dry hair but last year, i decided i wanted a change so i went to get my hair colored from a "trusted" stylist I used in my relaxed days. Well to make a long story short, she bleached my hair and put a rinse on top of that ...all in the same day:wallbash:. Twice after that...maybe within 2 months time, my hair was colored again...double:wallbash:. So...I started experiencing breakage...duh..because I'm guessing I wasn't mositurizing enough. I recently got a very good trim. I see where the hair broke off in the top...shorter strains [noticable at times because i wear my hair in its natural state] compared to the rest of my hair but it doesn't look horrible. I need suggestions for moisturizing and repair. I haven't experiencing shedding since the trim but i want to nurse my hair back to health ASAP. I am currently wearing braids [cornrows] as a protectivie style. I don't have a picture at this time but will take once and post it soon.

Help!!

My three recommendations (in order) are the following:

#1) The first thing I recommend is upping your DCing... try twice a week. DCing on dry hair (overnight) will do WONDERS for your dry hair.

#2) How do you style your hair? If you use heat, I recommend laying off direct heat and try airdrying.... it retains sooooo much moisture.

#3) Lastly, how are your leave-ins & moisturizers working for you? You might need to find other products that work for your hair.

HHG!!

you could try virgin, unrefined Shea butter mixed w/coconut oil. Its all natural and does help with keeping hair moisturized.

Absolutely..... how did I forget?

#4) Natural oils are a dry hair's best friend. :couple: Make sure you incorporate oils (EVOO, coconut, jojoba....whatever works for you) in your DCing, sealing, moisturizing.... every element of your haircare.

HOnestly when My hair became dry like the Sahara Dessert, Peanut Brittle, Hot Griddle.

I came home I clarifyed so nothing would block my moisture.

I shampoo'd with a moisturizing conditioner (nexxus therapee at the time)

I put Silk Elements Creme Tub in my hair with a SELF HEATING CHOLESTEROL CAP on for 2 hours.

without rinsing I then put Amla oil in for 1 hour under the same cap. Took a nap!

Rinsed it out really good and dryed under the dryer. Protective styled it.

I did this for 3 weeks straight minus the Amla oil and my hair was thanking me for it. :)

Now I use a daily moisturizer NTM Leave in and then put in a pump of Herstyler Serum.

As Reecie suggested DC's, make sure its a moisturizing DC. As a natural I use Jessicurl WDT doctored with JBCO, EVOO and honey for maximum moisture. You could also try Lustrasilk Shea Butter and Mango cholsterol doctored with JBCO, EVOO and honey for maximum moisture as well (I'm sure other ladies will suggest other moisture DC's as well). Keep protective styling for now and continue to baby your hair. I take it you will be mainly moisturizing for now but don't forget about the protein as well, just to make sure your moisture/protein balance is just right or else with lots of moisture, moisture, moisture and no protein will lead you with breakage issues all over again. HTH

Roux Porosity Control!!! My ends were dryer than dry so last night I clarified and dc'd w/ a protein/moisture all in one condish mixed with moisturizing dc, then rinsed. I added roux pc, left it on for about a minute. Now my ends are extra moisturized.

I would say clarify as jj said, and try to seal that moisture in from your dc w/ roux porosity.

1)I definitely need to DC more. I need to find one that works for me.
2) I have only used heat on my hair three times, and that was to blow dry. Every other time I air dry. If my hair is not twisted, it is worn in a curly fro. Which means my hair is worn loose 90% of the time.
3) I need to find a leave-in conditioner. Honestly, i know i don't moisturize enough.

thanks for your replies everyone. any suggestions on DCs and leave-ins? I know I will have to find what works for me but i'm open to what you guys have tried and found helped.

There's your answer. You need more moisture and you need to condition your hair more. Keep experimenting with leave-ins. You'll find one you like.

I always recommend natural products:

An amazing DC is Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose. Put this on your dry hair overnight and your hair will be like new.

Leave-ins are tricky. I'm still trying to find one that is better for my hair. My favorite, thus far, is Keracare, but it has mineral oil in it... so I'm on the prowl for another.

I have been using Nature's Gate Jojoba Conditioner (available at Whole Foods), 2 teaspoons of honey, and 2 teaspoons of aloe vera gel. My hair has never been this moisturized, soft, and detangled in my life. If you get a chance to try it, I hope it works as well for you!

Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner is a all-in-one conditioner. You can use it as a rinse out, leave in and even a DC.
