Hello,

I need some advice. My 4 year-old daughter has 4b/4a hair (I think) and it is very dry and is breaking off. I would say about the last inch & 1/2 of her hair is doing so. I've already trimmed it but the problem isn't going away.

I use CON for shampoo - only on her scalp. I have the K-Cutter comb for detangling. I use Miss Keys 10 en 1 conditioner and follow-up with Apoghee (sp?) Balancing Moisturizing Treatment. But her hair never feels moisturized. It always feels dry especially the ends. I have the hardest time detangling it because it is very thick. At one point during the summer is was was mid-back length when stretched. I cannnot find the right products to moisturize it. I try to keep it in a style that I won't have to re-do until the weekend to avoid manipulating it.

Please help, I am trying to save her head full of beautiful hair. I want it to be healthy again. Oh, I also have her sleep on a satin pillow case.

Does anyone have suggestions? /images/graemlins/frown.gif

I once shampooed my scalp only and had a difficult time trying to come through my hair. I shampooed my scalp only and did a deep conditioner. My hair was coming out in clumbs I said, well maybe I should go back through with shampoo on the ends of my hair. That made the difference. I guess I had product build-up on the ends of my hair and shampooing it out made the difference. Try this, it may make the difference too with detangling.

How do you styled her hair during the day?

Hello Kaddy,

I used to shampoo all of her hair but that seemed to maked her hair even drier. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

I usually keep her hair in 3 to 4 braids/plaits or two cornrows. Very simple hair styles because I am trying to be gentle with it and her hair is gets messy after about 3 days. So, it is easier to re-do simple styles.

Many here don't find Aphogee conditioner that moisturizing. Maybe you should try another moisturizing conditioner like, Nexxus Humtress (my fav), Keracare Humecto, etc.

I agree with Denali, maybe it's the products that aren't working well for her hair. I think you should try another conditioner too. the nexxus products are good. One that worked well for me, although some ladies don't like it, is Motions Oil Moisturizer Moisture Silk Protein Conditioner. This made my hair very song and easy to comb. It has detangling capabilities. I got this from the Motions website:
Contains a blend of moisturizing, softening and detangling agents.
Contains silicones and Vitamin E conditioning emollients.
Contains Aloe Vera Gel and Proteins to condition, help detangle and increase the hairs' moisture holding capabilities.

I forgot to ask: What do I do to seal in the moisture on her natural hair. After conditioning the hair and rinsing it out - What do you put on it to seal in the moisture? Should I cut more of her hair since it is already breaking off? It is only breaking in the middle of the back of her head - which is the most fragile section of her hair.

Oil seals moisture in. Serums are good too... Try a deep moisturizing conditioner before chopping, it will make a huge difference. That Aphogee stuff is some crap, imo.. Let me search for that moisturizing conditioner thread you...

Thanks Kaddy and Denali03 for the suggestions. I am writing down the products that were suggested. I hope one of them will work. I agree that I haven't found the right products for her texture.

I agree with Denali about the oils or a serum for the ends. Definitely do a deep conditioning treatment too. My new oil for my ends is castor oil since it is so thick and a little goes a long way. It has a slight scent, but goes away after a while. since you do braids/plaits and conrows, you should definitely try to keep the ends moisturized. What do you put on the ends to keep the braids, if anything. Maybe you should put extra oil on the ends and try to fold them under some.

I used to have the same problem, I still suffer from dry hair. What seems to work for my ends is to deep conditon the hair first ( use any Queen Helene deep conditioner and mix with Goya Extra virgin Olive oil), then use Creme of Nature shampoo or any shampoo for natural hair; put a dime size or depending on thickness, quarter size amount on the scalp only, not the hair! I found doing this to my hair cause horrible tangles and knots. Afterwards, you can either use a liquid leave in conditoner that will soften the hair up, or use any Suave conditioner and wash it out again. Comb hair w/ k- cutter or afro pick while damp, not wet and use either olive oil again or whatever moisturizing products you use to give the hair gloss ( BB oilsheen in a jar is excellent). Or, as I saw on a post here, try using pure castor oil (making mental note to buy some today) Then you can part her hair is sections and twist it to let it moisturize. This may be a huge help- if you decide to do this, please let let me know if it works! Thanks!:)

for detangling and to seal in moisture try kids organics detangling lotion for moisture follow it up with a glycerine spray in the evening b4 bed the moisture balancing product by aphogee is not moisturizing enough and contains various protiens which can be drying I would treat the ends with mango butter you can get it at walmart in the skin care section and or oils those k cutter combs scare me have you tried a wide toothed plastic bone comb? [/ QUOTE ]I use kids organic detangling lotion on my 5 year old (Kayla) and it works well to keep her hair moisturized. You aren't blow drying her hair are you? You know what that does to the hair.

Also check if the shampoo has ALS or SLS. I have been finding that dries and breaks my 4a/b ends.

Good thread. /images/graemlins/up.gif I am afraid bunning will cause breakage so I am taking precaution. I have found that Salerm wheat germ mask is great for sealing ends, too.

I've tried castor oil, wild growth oil, profectiv strenthening creme and carrot creme on her ends. Initially, they all seem to work well but after a few days, those products just seem to attract dirt. Her ends just look and feel brittle.

It seems as though wild growth oil worked the best but I was still hoping to find something better.

Thanks - I will try this technique. I have always detangled her hair while it was drenched in conditioner. I do find that I need to wash her scalp but it is so hard to reach it since her hair is so thick & she hates to have her hair washed. So, I usually apply the CON shampoo with a applicator bottle to her scalp before wetting the hair. I will try softening it up with conditioner first. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

What kind of glyercine spray? Do I make up my own concoction or should I use something like S-curl moisturizing spray?

I usually keep her hair in 3 or 4 braids as you described. She hates it though because she wants to wear her hair out.

The K-cutter comb actually works better on her hair than the wide tooth plastic comb I used to use. I have been taking pictures of her hair, I will get my husband to help me put together a photo journal so that I can let you all see what her texture is like.

Kayla, what products have you tried to use to moisturize her hair? Did you check to see if there was any alcohol in those products?

I would recommend Elasta QP Oil Recovery Moisturizer...it's the best moisturizer I have ever used, thanks to Adrienne!

Poohbear,

You know, Elasta QP Oil Recovery is one the first products I used on her hair from the age of 1 1/2 until 3. Then at age 3 her texture changed from a extremly soft texture to a more coarse 4b texture. So, for the past year I have been trying to find products and a regimen that works for her thick hair. I still have a half bottle of it but doesn't seem to work as well anymore. I don't know, maybe I need to clarify and try Kenra or keracare moisturizing conditioners. I have been afraid to clarify since her hair is already dry and is hard to comb.

Again, the driest part of her hair are the last inch and half, especially in the middle back part, not the nape above the nape.

My daughter also has 4a/4b hair and trying to find anything that works is a journey. The Kenra line is a good one! Elucence is too. I've also tried NTM Daily deep conditioner and the leave in (haven't tried the shampoo though). Makes it really, really soft. To seal in moisture I've used WGO and then braid it up. That is the only oil that seems to work on her especially this small dry, dry, dry, dry, dry, patch on the back of her head, above the nape just like you said. Carol's daughter HHB is also a good choice. I find that it works best on damp hair.

I also spritz her hair in the morning with water mixed with conditioner to keep it moisturized, add a little oil and then rebraid it. Have you tried condition washes on her?

Your description of your daughter's hair sounds very similiar to my daughter's hair. Yes, I have tried conditioner washes. It just seems as though I haven't found the perfect product for her hair or at least the perfect mix of products. /images/graemlins/frown.gif I am going to try the Kids Organics Detangler, Kenra or Keracare & see if that works.

What is NTM?

Oh, thanks!

Kayla, someone just post that NTM is on sale at Target. I believe they said it was a gift pack that included the shampoo, conditioner, and deep recovery hair mask. That is a good price since each one alone can run about 5 to 6 bucks.

Maybe you can take her to a salon for a conditioning treatment until you are able to find the right products. I am a 4a and I know how dry this type of her can get.

girl, go to the beauty supply or grocery store and get some World of Curls activator. put it all over her hair. then put Vaseline on just the ends. braid it up. try that before cutting. both are readily available ane very inexpensive...

/images/graemlins/weird.gif Yes! /images/graemlins/weird.gif Yes! /images/graemlins/weird.gif Yes! This works *very* well! After following Adrienne's suggestion, I was amazed. Eventually, I had to switch to a different moisturizer /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif but everything else stayed the same - same wonderful results! You gotta try it! /images/graemlins/poke.gif
