When I was younger I had a standing appointment with my stylist other sturday at 6:00am. No skips.

Now this has all changed over the years. Initially it was because I was broke and couldn't afford to pay someone to do my hair. Now it's a bit deeper.

I don't know when my Neo last encountered SLS or ALS or any detergent!
and I can just imagine the abuse Neo is gonna get from that shampoo brush. In fact the only reason I'm going is because I want a roller set and I have yet to figure out how to do one successfully.
I was thinking I should do a real good pre poo and detangle to protect Neo, or maybe a quick co-wash and leave in the conditioner.

So my question is this... what do you guys do to protect your hair from the salon?

I haven't been to one in a while but I would say first and foremost go to a stylist that you can trust and will listen to your requests. Your hair is in their hands so it's not what you do but what you allow them to do. You can do all the prepping you want and still come out with a southside fade.

To answer your question, I use lots of oil or a pre-poo. Usually EVOO (use whatever you have/prefer) if I only use oil or I prepoo with a thick moisturizing conditioner, it helps so that the shampoo isn't as harsh.

OT: But how do you prep for a touch-up? You can't really cake on prod or you risk the relaxer not taking all that well. Not trying to hijack OP just curious how this is done.

Conditioner: If she's just going in for a wash, style, and cut because she didn't state if she was relaxed or natural and I can't tell by her picture. Just to protect against the SLS/ALS.

Oil: To coat the strand to protect against the relaxer. Spray it on if it's in an aerosol can. If it's the same normal oil in a bottle, distribute using your hands or an applicator bottle.

EDIT: I agree you can't put heavy product before applying a relaxer but I don't really know what the OP is doing fully.

I only use a stylist for a color and dusting now, BUT...I prepped by giving my hair a deep conditioning with protein and moisture. Plus, I used Porosity Control as a mid-step.

She does her thing...

then a day or two afterwards, I followed up with another DC for moisture and steam treatment with oil.

IMHO the best way to protect your hair from the salon is to be up front with your stylist and proactive about your hair. Let them know, in no uncertain terms what you want, what you don't want and that all decisions about your hair are yours to make.

I used to bring my hairdresser my " salon bag" when I went. It contained my shampoo, conditioner, blow dry items, anything I wanted used on my hair. Even my bone comb was in it. She respected the fact that I wanted my products used in the salon as well as home.

I guess what I am saying to you is something my sister told me......

"Speak up. You're buying..you ain't begging!"

I only go for braids and weaves. I wash, condition, and blow out my hair prior to going. I also take enough money to post bail if necessary:look:

I love my stylist b/c he genuinely cares about the health of my hair, so I trust him. BUT, I only go to see him for the occasional straightening. My visits are usually b/c of some special event so I know at least 3 months in advance.

So during those three months, I henna every month without skipping; I DC every week with heat and then overnight; and finally the day before I go in I pre-poo with lots of oil overnight, then DC and go in with the deep conditioner in my hair. Generally, he will shampoo and insant condition then blow dry and style. After, the direct heat, I go back to a moisture intense protocol for about 6 weeks to avoid a setback.

It's a process, but if I'm gonna straighten safely, I'm committed. HTH

I'm at the salon now about to cry. She combed my hair while it was almost dry and didn't detangle while it was wet or anything. I could hear my hair breaking and it hurt!!!!
Now I'm under the dry and my hair feels so dry.

I know it's my fault I should have said something but I didn't want to insult her. Silly I know. It will be a very long time before anyone else messes with my hair

Great advice. I need to find someone I feel comfortable enough to do that with. My stylist is also a family friend and I just dint know how to approach her. I'm def gonna work on it

It mite be ok.. your under the dryer now so your hair wasn't completely dry. I still think most hairdressers know what their doing..but its ok to ask her questions if your wondering what shes doing and why..
