Don\'t laugh but.....How do you \"dull\" hairpieces?

I recently purchased a phony pony and it has your typical spiral curls, but they are so daggone shiny and perfect. I want to make it look more natural. Is there any way to make it duller and to shall we say mess it up a little?

I'd like to know how to do this, too.

The other day I saw two really cute child sized phony puffs for $7.99. But I left them in the store because they looked soooo crispy and shiny.

I have noticed that the curly phony ponies on display usually look duller and fluffier. Maybe when they are touched a lot it makes them look more natural...

How about washing them and blowdrying them?

Re: Don\'t laught but.....How do you \"dull\" hairpieces?

i know what you mean, i wanted to purchase one not too long ago and i left it in the store becase it was so shiny. the one they had on display was very natural looking and didn't have so much shine. when the girl took a new one out for me to see it was mega shiny. i asked her about it and she said the ones on display get that way because of all the handling. i think after the wear and tear they start to dull a little. i don't know if it would work but have you thought of washing it once and hanging it to dry? some of those ponies aren't cheap so i know you won't want to chance it and mess it up. if it were straight i would tell you do blowdry it but the spiral curls, i don't know. i was ready to buy the display but the lady said she could only sell it if it were the last one. good luck figuring this one out

I would say try washing the hairpiece. I have seen some that are actually less shiny though. Perhaps even a human hair hairpiece would look less shiny and more natural.

Re: Don\'t laught but.....How do you \"dull\" hairpie

For synthetic pieces I wash with suave coconut 'poo and then spray with ACV water. Airday. Perfect look for my 4b hair. I don't like using human hair because too "slippery" and doesn't have the staying power that synthetics do.

Re: Don\'t laught but.....How do you \"dull\" hairpie

What effect does the ACV water have on the hair? Is this to make the synthetic hair look more natural or to help retain moisture in your own hair once the piece is attached? Does it smell after dried?

It makes the synthetic hair looks more like my own with the added benefit of lowing its ph so that it doesn't absorb moisture from my hair. I learned to lower the ph on synthetic hair before braiding from the robin the hair lady -- I figured out that ACV was the cheapest way and I keep ph strips on had to check my solutions for proper levels. BTW, don't know how I lived without ph strips because I now check all my skincare and haircare products for proper ph levels in like 30 seconds. I found to my dismay, that ALOT of products claiming "low ph" are in fact NOT. I carry ph strips to the stores when purchasing certain items, it's become almost an obsession . . .

BTW, by the time the piece drys, smell is gone . . .

Re: Don\'t laught but.....How do you \"dull\" hairpie

What is the proper ratio for the pH balanced ACV mix you do? Thanks

Put it in a lingerie bag and wash it in woolite.

My ACV ph level is 4 to 4.5. Unfortunately, I don't have a specific ratio that would make sense to you. I know from experience that 3 capfuls of a particular ACV cap to a particular point on a particular bowl in my kitchen gets me the desired ph. . .

When not using that particular ACV with that particular bowl, then I just mix water and ACV and check the ph with the strips.

Wow, I was wondering the same thing! I wore my phony pony to work for the first time and it's a bit shinier than my natural hair.

I guess this is a BUMP!

Re: Don\'t laught but.....How do you \"dull\" hairpie

I tried washing with shampoo and then apply ACV. The hair looks shinier than before.

Re: Don\'t laught but.....How do you \"dull\" hairpie

Good ol' hairspray/spritz and some sticky finger manipulation, and in some cases hairspray and temporary color spray.

Re: Don\'t laught but.....How do you \"dull\" hairpie

I finally found a solution. I washed the hair and then applied some of my Sebastians reconstructor. I guess the heavy protein was enough to dullen any shiny head of hair. I left the reconstructor in and allowed it to dry and I've very satisfied /images/graemlins/smile.gif

What about the combs and the drawstring? Do they ever get tangled in the hair?
