Hello everyone,

I've been away from the site for a while so I thought I'd log in and post a new thread. I have a lot of family and co-workers raving about Dominicians doing their hair. Their hair looks beautiful, bouncy and straight and for the most part healthy. However, I'm concerned about the amount of heat applied to the hair and they do not use any kind of oil on the hair. Has anyone explored how damaging this could be down the road?

For the record, I still visit my beautician of seven years (faithful and true) for relaxers and maintenance. I normally do roller sets, very seldom blow dry so I'm not sure what all the hype is about! Can't you achieve the same look with a roller set and wrap? Any horror stories or praise reports.

For now, status quo for me. Just curious.

I have been going to dominicans for 6 yrs to get my hair done. Prior to LHCF, I used to blow dry once a week. It always looked so great, bouncy and silky for a while.... until I started to notice how thin my hair was getting. :perplexed I stopped for over a year and decided to get braids which led to a series of nightmarish things happenning to my hair :( Including a braiding accident and scissor happy weavologist (bad memories) . and now I am back to them with no blow dryers! Just rollerset. I haven't found any other stylists that can set my hair straighter.

To the bolded, yes you can. The thing about Dominicans is they use a minimal amount of products so your hair comes out more bouncy and light. Heavy greases and oil aren't actually good for your hair. Doms focus more on the health of your hair and emphasizes things like d/cing, hot oil treatments, etc.

They also tend to have faster service and be cheaper. I can get a wash & set + my roots blown out for about $20 in NYC.

Yes, getting weekly Dom blowouts can be damaging, which is why some people only get the roots done. If you're happy with your current stylist, then you can try a dom salon for the experience. It really isn't that big of a deal. Of course, just like anything else your experience can vary by the particular salon you go to.

I had my first Dominican experience about 2 months ago and I was telling my sister that my hair has NEVER felt so soft and silky. I have very coarse 4B hair and I was astonished at how soft and bouncy it was. I also noticed that my hair did not feel dry even after several days of only using hair polisher. Probably the most interesting thing that I noticed was that I only combed out a few strands of hair for the first few days after I got my hair done.

The downside was that unfortunately the person who did my rollerset was very ROUGH with my new growth (I was about 5 weeks post) and she combed out a lot of hair with that fine-toothed comb they use. If I could find someone who was more gentle then I could definitely see my hair thriving by having a Dominican blow-out (roots only) maybe every 2-3 weeks.

I have been going to the Dominicans consistently for 2 years and for the past 2 I have been out of state and have had to rely on myself. Just recently I was back in NY and had my relaxer done and well I most definitely notice the difference.

I mean there is something about the way they use heat which makes hair really strong. The combination of conditioners, leave in and rollerset and then the heat applied all makes the hair very strong and healthy. I think that it's best to have only the roots blow dried after the rollerset is taken out. I do feel that long term use of their handheld blow dryers over the entire length of the hair will lead to the ends thinning out.

You are right, they don't use much oil in the hair except for like a dime size amount of either perfect for perms mixed with IC or mizani rose hair conditioning oil. That is fine by me, because it doesn't weigh down the hair and with the heat it becomes evenly distributed throught the hair. The one thing I don't appreciate is their raking through the hair with the fine tooth comb. I used to not care, but after 2 years of babying my hair on my own, I most definitely notice the (not so gentle) difference. I must have driven the woman crazy asking her to look at the comb to see how much hair came out... surprisingly not much, but it felt like a whole lot :ohwell:
