I want to finally see what all the fuss is about and go to a Domincan Salon. Any recommendations for a salon in the area?

I've never been to one and don't plan to...But there is one I pass on my way to work in Silver Spring, off of Georgia Avenue. It's right when you cross the Silver Spring MD/DC line, after you exit from under that little tunnel, you'll see that brand new firehouse on your left, and right across from that is a Dominican salon.

Arelis is good. They are located on Colesville, Rd arcross from City Place Mall in downtown Silver Spring. I've been a client for over 5 years. Areli herself is a natural head and helped me transition. Make sure that you let ARELI do your hair. I went recently for a blow out and trim. Pics are in my fotki. If you like you can tell her I referred you. I used to be a weekly client back in my texlaxed days so they know me real well. LOL

Arelis
8646 Colesville Rd.
Silver Spring, MD 20910
301-495-3771

There's also a feature on this salon on Roundbrush.com

ETA: Honorable mention Judith's in Adams Morgan. There's more info on her shop in the Salon Review forum. Also, again if you go there make sure JUDITH does your hair.

Hey, Sunshine- IS that you in the avatar? Your hair is really long when it is blown out.

How much do the Blowouts cost?

GIRRRLL yes that's me.....:look: I paid $50 for everything (trim, deep condish etc) When I went on the regular it was $40 but that's was a few yrs ago..so things go up. At Judith's it was $45 (I think) but that was a year ago so that may be more now.

I agree with SunShineOne for Judith :)

Also, not Dominican, but does a helluva blow out and gentle with natural hair is Yodit @ Salon Revive

I was going to recommend this one and the one on Georgia Ave near Howard. Both I hear are good. A co-worker prefers the one near Howard more cause she liked the way her hair turned out and no wait time.

I second Judiths but I have not went anywhere else so I dont have anything to compare her to...please make sure you make an appointment with HER though...I observe how the rest of the stylists do hair in there and I don't like it.

Your hair looks so healthy. You must have a lot of shrinkage. It is really long when streched. What about Visions? It would be closer to me. I want to go this weekend for my birthday.

Visions is cool also...I went there once w/ Jlove74. However, that was almost 2 yrs ago and I did not get my hair blown out just roller set. J can prob share more insight bec I think she went more regular.

Also, Salon Revive is excellent. It's a black owned (Ethiopian) Aveda concept salon. They do my color. Yodit is my stylist there but she's about to go on maternity leave unitl late June. However, they are all good stylist and they have a very DIVERSE clientele. I just got my color touched up and she did a wash n go for me and it still looks good. I'll take some pics later.

Yes, girl shrinkage....supposed to love it...I don't really. LOL But yeah my hair is strange it shrinks and then stretches out. It just so happens the last few times we've seen each other it was either freshly washed or straight in a an updo. Once you get your hair blown out you too will be amazed at the length of your hair.:yep:

ETA: Please stay CLEAR of Giovanni's....ask Sylyver2!

Judy was a stylist at Visonz before she got her own spot. There was another lady in there that did my hair once and I had no complaints, I think her name was Estella.

Visionz is right across from Judy's too.

A bunch of my co-workers went to Arelis' shop, and they adore her. All of them were natural. They had been telling me to go since 2004, and I still haven't been there!

The one reason I'm more partial to recommending Arelis is that she is NATURAL herself. I think that make a big difference. Another reason why I like going to Salon Revive...that don't blink and they handle your hair w/care. So I can relax and actually enjoy the experience.

I also recommend you bring your own rattail comb with you when you go the Dominicans...ANY of them. Sometimes the shampoo assistants don't speak english the best and are used to everyone having relaxed hair so I just hand them my combs and ask them to spray more water/leave-in during the rollerset process. I take a rattail comb I got from Sally's (I think) the teeth are spaced farther apart than the ones they use at the salon.

I dont have to worry about that part @ Revive they use a large comb/brush at the bowl and then use a flat/round hand brush (It looks similiar to a shampoo brush) that detangles really well and fast with minimal hair loss. I wish the dominicans used this technique. I can say that is one of the advantages for me in going to Revive over Arelis.

Yeah I wasn't trying to put you on blast but damn your hair looks so good. It normally looks good anyway but I have never seen it straight. I am blown away at the lenght. It is really long.

I LOVE her too. She's really sweet and funny. She's love her "FRO" :lachen:

The thing is that...the whole Silver Spring DM stylist crew...started out back in 2000 at Luissa's when it was on Ramsey Ave. Then they all dispersed and started their own shops. A good friend on mine turned me onto Arelis back in 02 when she first started her shop.

I recommend Judith's as well. It seems like Judith styles just about everyone, unless you request someone else. I went this past Friday, and the shampoo girl ended up doing my hair. She was slow, but she did an excellent job. My 16 weeks post NG looks better than a fresh relaxer.

A few friends of mine go to Claudia's and they love it...but only let Claudia do your hair. I've also heard wonderful things about Arelis as well.

I had to think for a minute. What I was trying to say is that a recent picture or an older one. Your natural hair is longer than APL when blown out. It looks really nice.

I made my appointment this weekend for Aerlis. When I made the appointment I said I wanted a dominican blowout. The receptionist was like you want to do a wet set. I guess they don't call it a dominican blow out.:yep:

No I don't think they describe it in those exact terms. But just tell them when you get there that you want your hair set on rollers then blown out. Please make sure that you tell them you want ARELIS to do your hair. I suggest you go and introduce your self to her when you arrive.

Make sure you post pics!! I know its gonna be pretty...

OT: What you doing for your bday?

I am going to the japanese steakhouse tomorrow for dinner. My aunt and I share the same birthday so we will be down my grands' house to celebrate.
