I put coconut oil in my hair and slept in a plastic cap. My hair felt wet, even mositurized when I took it off but as my hair had dried it felt dry and did not recover all day no matter what I put on it. Does anyone know why this is or have any advice about this?

Thanks in advance.

I was going to mention this in the other thread, but yes, me and overnight treatments don't seem to work for some reason. I don't think it affected my hair after it was washed but I didn't like the way it felt at ALL.

Did you wash it out in the morning?

coconut nut oil dries my hair out sometimes. try mixing it with other oils and evn your conditioner or deep cond.

No, I did not wash my hair afterwards. I thought that I would try to wear my hair with a plastic cap at night for a while because I always have so much oil in my hair that my skin was breaking out from sleeping on my pillow.

I did NOT know this. I will try olive oil tonight. In the past, I had used coconut oil and washed it out the night afterwards. I think the fact that I tried all sorts of sprays to remoisturize my hair -- including some with glycerin -- did not help the situation at all - unfortunately. :ohwell:

Have you tried Avocado Oil? Maybe it can mix with the Coconut Oil and keep your hair moist.

Okay...I did wash mine out. I can only imagine how your hair felt. I don't know if it was bad....but I won't be doing it again....anytime soon.

This same thing happened to me with coconut oil but I thought that it was because the baggie was not closed all the way. I now mix it with other oils. :)

I tried using pure coconut oil a couple of times and, as others have mentioned, it made my hair feel dry. Or, maybe it just made it feel less moisturized than it usually does, but not necessarily dry. I just remember that I was very unhappy with the negative results. So, I believe using pure coconut oil just does not agree with some people's hair.

The funny thing is that now, years later, I am using Organic Root Stimulator's Nature's Shine on my hair after washing and I love it. I apply it sparingly when my hair is about 75% air-dried. It is coconut oil-based but has other oils mixed with it, so that is why I gave it a try. I am very glad that I did. :)

Are you guys using Refined Coconut oil? that kind is drying, but Unrefined , Virgin Coconut oil is very moisturizing. There is a huge difference. It can say 100% pure and that has nothing to do with how it was processed.

Hmmm, that's an interseting question. Thanks for bringing that up, Irresistible. :)

I know that it was my intention to buy unrefined coconut oil, but that doesn't guarantee that I actually did. I only bought one jar and that was years ago, so there is no way for me to check except maybe to go back to the same health food store and see if I can find/recognize the same product. I remember that the oil got hard, and I had to set the jar in warm water to liquify it. But, I'm not sure if that is any indication of whether it was genuinely unrefined.

I usually check for the 'unrefined' label on every applicable product I buy. But, who knows if I may have picked up the wrong thing by mistake.:scratchch I will return to that store to check.

Tryn2growmyhair, I'm sorry, I talked about the coconut oil without mentioning what I actually like as an overnight treatment. A mixture of half unrefined shea butter and half virgin olive oil works well for me, melted/warmed in a plastic applicator bottle before applying. :)

My overnight treatment doesn't dry my hair out...I use EVOO and Dabur Vatika Oil. My hair feels much better if I do an overnight treatment before my weekly shampoo...it doesn't feel stripped.

I am using refined coconut oil, I will try the virgin coconut oil.

Convert to olive oil. :)
@CatSuga and everyone else who suggested olive oil, I tried it today and my hair still felt dry when the moisture evaporated but the problem might also be that I tried to counterract the dryness by adding a glycerin spare (AO White Camellia) and my hair dried out even more no matter that I then tried to spray and olive oil and water spray on it.

I have washed my hair now and I think that I will try to just use a castor oil avocado oil and jojoba mix. Those are oils that have done right by my hair in the past.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I was trying to use the nighttime treatment as a night time baggie method and to protect my sheets and pillows from the oil that is on my hair -- my forehead has really been breaking out.

Any more advice? I will definitely be buying Virgin Coconut oil and trying that.

Oh... I should have mentioned that I wash my mixture out in the morning. It seems that you aren't washing yours out, so maybe my mixture wouldn't work well for you. I know that I cannot use shea butter or oilve oil on my hair unless I am going to wash it out because they will weigh my hair down. When I tried using unrefined shea butter alone as a leave-in product my hair, it made it look dull and heavy, no matter how little I used.

Did you apply oils to dry hair??? I find that oils work best on my hair when it's wet and after I sprayed it with leave-in or moisturizer. I don't do overnight treatments but I do pre-wash treatments before I shampoo my hair anywhere from 30mins to an hour. It leaves my hair really soft and kinda limp but my hair is still strong. :yep: So try oils on wet hair! HTH! ;)

It will usually say it on it, Its tricky cause they all say 100% pure, then somewhere it will say refined, maybe in small letters even lol. This means its been bleached, and chemicals are usually used in the refineing process, Ive even heard it can have small amounts of lye in it. The indian stores kind, (the first kind i started using years ago) is ok, but they bottled it themselves and there is no info on the bottle. So I was never sure of it. Then i bought some online at fromnaturewithlove.com....BIIIIIG DIFFERENCE...you will see/feel the difference immediately. I buy the one that says virgin, they have different kinds there too, although I dont think any of them are refined. Virgin Coconut Oil is plentifull online, i havent seen much anywhere else, I did see one i in the health food store , and that was unrefined , it was sold for cooking and taking it internally ,but it was way too expensive to buy for hair use though

btw all coconut oils, both refined and unrefined, do solidify at room temp.

The indian store guy had it all backwards, he told me if it smells like coconut then its refined, its the other way around i believe, the unrefined has a slight natural coconut smell to it, cause it hasnt been refined and hasnt had the smell removed.

about another post...yes unrefined Shea Butter is heavy no matter how you use it and doesnt add much shine by itself, and does leave a dullness somewhat, i always have to use it with other oils, and leave ins to lessen the bulk of it in my hair and to add shine and get the most moisture out of it. Once I do all that its nothing short of wonderfull. lol

How do you know if your coconut is refined??

My experience has been the plastic cap causing this :yep: No matter what I put on my hair, I put a plastic cap and it has come out that way.

The kind I bought was food grade, so I ended up using drops of it once in a while for cooking. :)

This happened to me before. I used to leave the coconut oil in my hair and let it airdry, but when it dried, it was VERY dry and when I combed my hiar, I lost alot of strands and it even made this harsh cracklin sound when I combed it. I never did that again with coconut oil. I might use monoi oil every now and again, though, and have had no problems with that. I always rinse the coconut oil out now because I realized that it was making my hair very dry. As for overnight treatments, I might leave a conditioner mixed with an oil on my hair overnight, but then rinse it out the next day.

I am basically trying to do the baggie method at night. What else can I use then if I cant use coconut oil? I am trying to protect my skin by using the plastic cap. Oh, dear. Now I am confused because some have said that the plastic cap causes this problem.

Maybe you could use Amla Oil. I have never had problems with that, but the smell started to get to me. Oh, I just remembered I used to use Fantasia IC Nighttime Treatment with a silk scarf and had pretty good results, even though it is not as heavy as Amla or Coconut oil. I also used to use Ginseng Miracle Woner 8 Oil in the Original formula ( yellow bottle) and it worked nicely and had a nice fragrance, but it was a little greasy. I had the spray formula, not the oil formula. My hair was pretty easy to comb with this in it though.

I cant take the smell of Amla oil. I have some Surge oil and maybe I try that. Did you do the Ginseng oil with a plastic cap?
