Does this sound normal?

Like Nessa--I have just taken out my cornrows/extensions after having them in for two weeks. During that time, I cared for my hair very diligently, being sure to do rinses frequently followed by leave-in, keep my hair damp with braid spray and oiling my edges. When I took, the braids out I did notice a small bit of breakage at the hairline, but nothing too scary. What was kind of alarming was that I shed alot of hair when I followed up with a shampoo. I also did an Aphogee Protein, and then slathered on LUST to remain in my hair tonight. From what I could see my ends were moisturized and not split, and the hairs I lost were not short( though there were many). DO you think this is mostly hair that shed normally throughout the two weeks? Or did I do something wrong?

Hey Melodee,

I believe the hair that has shed is the hair that would have
shed if you didn't have the braids in. I read about this topic in a hair magazine.

I have some questions:
Did you use a wide-tooth comb when you combed through your hair?
Do you think you could have over saturated your scalp with braid spray?
Did you protect you hair at night with a scarf/bonnet?
What type of hair (extensions) did you use for your braids?

It's probably just normal shedding. I made a post similar not to long ago, about sooo much shedding after I removed some cornrows, and mostly everyone responded saying it was normal shedding. As, far as the breakage goes, I've never experienced breakage after cornrows, and don't think it normal at all. Maybe, it had something to do w/ the type hair you used. Or, maybe the hair was pulled to tight, and the hair snapped at that point.
I have the feeling that 4a hype type shed abit more then any other hair type. I could be wrong, be none of my friends hair shed like mine after cornrows, and they 4b/c and 3a and have very dense hair. Mine is thin and not as dense, only when it's veeerry nappy do it look dense.
I'm in cornrows too at the moment, and although I know my hair has been shedding alot lately and will shed alot more after I take them out, I'll probably be feeling the way you are right now.
Only advice I can give is try not to worry or stress, and watch your hair closely to see how it acting over the next week or 2.

Thanx guys. I feel better now. I think alot of it was normal. I normally shed about 100 strands a day. (I'm a shedder). It's just weird seeing it all shed at once.

Amber, I did use a wide tooth comb, I may have used too much braid spray, I did use a scarf faithfully (though it usually slides off by the morning), and it was Kankelon supplied by the braider!

Honeycomb, yes I have 4a hair that appears thick, but is really thin and fragile. The breakage around the hairline could have been caused by the pulling, but thank GOD it was very minimal!

I guess I'm a "shedder" too

My hair sheds when I wear corn rows even when I braid my own hair which I've done a few times this summer. Even after 1 week! When I take them down...shedding! Same as when I mix other hair in. Whether it's corn rows or individuals. It's normal and yes it's the hair that wasn't combed that's built up. My hair has still grown a lot so don't worry. Just keep it moist like you've been doing.

I believe this to be the case as well.

Yes the illusion of extra shedding is hard to deal with but it is hair that would have normally shed had you combed your hair daily.

I have experienced hairline breakage before. To combat that, get the braids done a little less tight and keep the hairline just as moisturized as the rest of the hair. Your hairline will break if too much tension is applied. You know after our hair is braided for the first week it looks like we have Asian eyes!
