I bought a D31 the other day and the bristles are sooo close together. I haven't used it yet b/c I got braids, but if i use it on my wet, natural hair, will it tear or break my hair?

I have the Denman 31 and it's bristles are farther apart than on the D3 & D4. I haven't noticed it tearing out or breaking any hair. I only use it when my hair has conditioner in it and it's soaking wet.

The D4 has closer bristles so it might if you have thick hair you might want to consider the D 31. I originally wanted the D4, too, but when the sales clerk at Sally's saw my hair, she recommended the D 31.

I have a D4 and a D83 paddle brush.
I have never had any problems with any of them.
I brush gently from the ends to the roots and It works great for me!

I have the large paddle brush (don't remember the number). I use that after I've used the D31 to detangle. The paddle brush smoothes my hair more for when I put it up in a ponytail. The paddle brush has more "pull" to it than the D31 does.

I really don't know how you ladies use those brushes. Those brushes have always managed to rip the hair from my head except for when my hair is freshly relaxed.

I think the the brush is best for those with natural hair. I would never use it if I was relaxed.

Maybe it is my technique. I have used them on my daughter's hair, she is 100% natural and found that the results we not as extreme as mine, but she did manage to loose some hair.

I only use it when my hair is wet & is full of conditioner. It might pull out your hair if your hair is not well moisturized and I would NEVER use it on my hair when it's fully dry. That would be a recipe for guaranteed breakage for me.

Maybe that is it!!!!! I had never used it on my daughter's hair when it was wet, only when dry. I maybe revisit this brush when I wash her hair again.

Exactly! I only use it when my hair is wet. All in all the brush is the best. I can not mantain great curl definition without it!

I've recently had the unfortunate pleasure of realizing that my Denman brush was mostly responsible for my thinning hair. I don't see a # on it but the bristles are close together. I noticed that my hair started taking longer than usual to air-dry (10+hrs) and my ends have been sheding and pulling out on its own. Now, when I wash my hair, I see 3-5" of full and coil-defined new growth and the middle is thin and the ends are straggly. I'll have to check out the D31 though.
(I used my Denman in the shower w/conditioner for a month to gently smooth my hair into ponytails.)

I agree. I refused to use one until I was done transitioning. I know my old hairstylists used them when I was relaxed to blowdry my hair though.
