Are you talking about shedding (losing the whole strand including the little white bulb at the end) or breakage?
I don't really have shedding close to touch up time.
But it is a time when I can get more breakage. This also depends on the methods and products I am using, and how much new growth I have.
I think the answer to your question is basically because of the line of demarcation. The more new growth you have, the more stress (when combing/styling) it's putting on the point where it meets your weaker relaxed hair and this stress causes breakage. (I hope I explained that well).
Hopefully some other ladies will chime in, but this is what I experience close to touch up time.
You know, I’ve been having some shedding as well (bulb at the end, no breakage—Thank God), and I am 12-weeks post relaxer. This seems normal for me and I tend to shed more in the spring and fall. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about as long as there’s no or minimal breakage, as RabiaElaine explained.
However, if the shedding seems a bit to excessive for yourself (to the point of being abnormal), and you are not experiencing breakage, it could possibly be related to your diet/nutrition/health rather than the relaxer. I’m not sure, but I can say for myself that taking iron supplements to treat my iron-deficiency anemia has reduced shedding by 10-fold. Also, eating more fish, eggs, and fresh or frozen vegetables have helped tremendously!
Then again, there are those days when shedding seems excessive to me because I’ve been paying too much attention to, keeping a sharp eye out for breakage.
I agree with the others. Our hair naturally cycles in and out of shedding phases. I think that alot of the shedding just coincides with many people's normal relaxing schedules so we tend to see them as having something to do with one another. By the time we relax, the shedding seems to let up because it has already run its course. If you don't relax your hair, the shedding will cease on its own. That has been my experience.
My hair always begins to shed a little more noticeably around 8 or 9 weeks post relaxer, and lasts for a few days- stops-- and then starts again around week 15 or so. Thats normal for me, and I don't worry too much about shedding. Demarcation breakage on the other hand is a whole nother ballgame.
Thanks for you replies!! It is definitely shedding with the white bulb on the end. It always happens when I am about 7 weeks post. It doesn't seem excessive, just more than normal. I was just wondering what everyone's experience was with this. Thanks again.
