weekly? What are your results like? I really like the way i look with straight hair. I feel like i look more my age and more sophisticated. Any tips on how i can blow my hair out every week without causing damage?

These days when I have to straighten my hair I...

  1. Dry hair almost completely on a cool settings while holding the hair "taut".
  2. Then with the dryer on a heat setting, I run my Denman (D5 Large Styling brush) brush through the length of my hair *twice*.
  3. After blowing and stretching each section-I flat iron with ceramic.
So far this method has resulted in less lost hair and stress. You may also want to invest in a good heat protectant. In the past I used Elasta QP silk. Also make sure that you give your a really good conditioning before heat styling. Moisture, Moisture, Moisture is the key!!!:)

Hey Lovelylocs, I straighten my hair and have been for years. I agree with ChocoKitty. Moisture is the key. I pretreat my hair with Aubrey GPB and olive oil for at least 30 min. w/heat and an hour without heat whichever I feel like doing that day. Then I shampoo with a moist. poo condition with an intensive moist conditioner because to me the more intense the moisture the better and I need something to balance out the protein treatment I use before pooing. Then I use a moist. leave in (switched from NTM to Rusk Sensories Smoother which is so much better IMO). I also went back to a product I loved Catwalk Smooth and Shine heat protectant which is more of a styling agent since it protects from blow dry and iron heat. Then I blow dry on medium heat with my paddle brush in sections and follow up with my Jilbere ceramic iron.

I straighten my hair weekly. I wash and press every tuesday, and I wash w/ moisturizing poo, cond and blowdry on low heat setting using the John Frieda's heat protecting serum. Once Im dry, I use WGO on scalp and hair, press as usual. I once was an airdrier, and Ive noticed that my hair sheds MUCH less when I blowdry. I dont feel like my hair is as fragile either, but the could be due to me transitioning, I dunno.
You can check my album to see how my hair looks after I did the above mentioned routine. ;)

Lately I have CW'd w/ DDTA; Detangle w/ Sebastians Conditioning Milk; NTM Leave-In or Sedal Intense Verano; Put in six pony-tails; Coat pony-tails in NTM Serum; Airdry; Flat iron and pin curl. Wrap everynight. Hair stays straight.

I have to agree with the other ladies. Moisture, moisture, moisture...

I wash and straighten my hair twice a week:
1) Olive oil pre-shampoo treatment (20mins w/heat)
2) Shampoo (Phytobrush)
3) Deep moisture condition once a week (Sunday) and just in the shower (Wednesday or Thursday night) with L'Oreals Natures Therapy Mega Moisture or Unfrizz Smoothing Treatment (LUST) - I think I'm going to try the LUST as a leave-in sometime soon
4) L'Oreals Taming Creme (heat protectant) and then roller set and dry under dryer
5) Flat iron making sure not to linger too long on any section of my hair
6) I put it up at night in a magnetic roller (I think I'm going to have to start using at least two cuz my hair falls off of the one) covered with a silk scarf

I'm still trying to master the roller set so I can stop flat ironing it. But I like it straight with bumped ends...

I went to the International Hair Show in Atlanta this weekend and sat in on a course with the Farouk/Chi Iron Design Team and they preach that it is safe to straighten the hair every day with a real ceramic flat iron. The models that I talked to after the show had wonderful real hair that looked great, healthy and had lots of length. They all wash deep condition and flat iron every day or 3 times weekly. The key, they mentioned in the class is deep moisture before hand, heat protectant, a good iron and quickly moving the iron through the hair. I love my ceramic iron... but I just don't know if I'm sold on the idea of using it every day.

I love the straight look which I wear 24/7 when I am not stretching relaxer.
I wrap(doobie) hair every night. Wash once a week, I use Rusk Leave in and a lot of John Frieda frizz ease serum, blow dry straight, add NTM silk leave in and jojoba and then wrap.

Hi Lovelylocs,

I have a friend who has beautiful waist length hair and her regimen is quite simple. She washes and conditions every 2 weeks, puts her oils in her hair, flat irons and pretty much wears it in a ponytail daily and her hair is in better health than mine....and my hair is in great health :) Her ends are very healthy and her hair grows sooo fast, probably due to infrequent manipulation. The past two weeks I've been flat ironing my hair using my Jilbere ceramic iron, only because I've been in the mood for straight hair, but I doubt I'll be doing it every week. Just cant get with the frequent heat styling, its just not me but it works for some.

would washing, treatment, air dry, then either blow dry or flat iron work? I dont want any damage, but i want it as straight as my dominican blow out.

I shampoo, treat with a protein reconstructor when needed, deep condition with a moisturizing treatment using a plastic cap and hood dryer set on medium heat for 15-20 minutes, apply a leave in, comb through, air dry about 70%, blow out the roots on medium heat, followed by a light press with ceramic flat iron on medium heat. I then apply a scalp oil, comb through to the ends, and then, depending on the look I desire, roller set or wrap.

"safe to straighten the hair every day with a real ceramic flat iron" - I can't agree with this. I'm almost certain that the hair representative of many AAs would disentegrate under a daily, direct heat regimen.
