Mine feels pretty dry this time. Is that an indicator that the realxer may not be the best one for your hair? I can't afford anymore setbacks so I'm trying to determine whether I need to switch relaxers. It does the job...gets it straight but I don't know. Once I apply my daily moisturizer and castor oil, my hair ends up feeling silky and wonderful but after I wash and deep condition...its drier than it should be after it airdries.
Suggestions?

Ifyou're using a no-lye relaxer use a chelating shampoo (to remove calcium hydroxide) then a very moisturizing conditioner. . If not maybe you're not using a good enough moisturizing conditioner.

I'm using a Lye relaxer Optimum Multimineral. I've been trying every moisturizing conditioner I can get my hands on. I'm thinking maybe my leave in...Giovanni Direct isn't moisturizing enough. I'll try something thicker at next wash.

Thanks for responding.

Optimum mineral is a sodium hydroxide relaxer but if you read the ingredients you will see that it does contain calcium hydroxide which is a subsistute for sodium hydroxide in no-lye relaxers.

So for optimum mineral LYE relaxer is the only one that i have seen that has calcium and guanine hydroxide mixed with calcium. Either try the chelating shampoo or switchrelaxers.

I have this same problem. I use Affirm for sensitive scalps as my relaxer. Does anyone know if it is normal for the hair to feel more dry after a relaxer...

When I used no-lye, my hair would always feel bone-dry after a relaxer. Now that I use lye, my hair after a relaxer feels moisturized.

I just relaxed with Elasta QP lye regular and the same thing happened to me. My hair feels crinkly- on top of it being very underprocessed. This is the first time this has happened. I think it's the type or too much oil. My hair is not breaking at all though...hopefully it'll stay like that.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to switch relaxers on this next go 'round. I usually use lye relaxer with no problem. Even my shedding, which had slowed to a bare minimum, has kicked back up since this relaxer last week. I'm feeling sad about that. I'm going to have to use some essential oils and do some serious scalp massages.

Usually not, but this last relaxer that I put in my hair in July had the crown and front of my hair feeling dry and brittle. So much so that I began to go out of my comfort zone and search for a stylist out where I am to fix it. I then calmed myself and moisturized, deep conditioned, baggied, clarified, and the whole process over and over again for about a month... also kept heat off and it's fine now.

So, I don't know if I underprocessed or over processed it, but it's back to normal thank the goodness! From now on I may just get it professionally relaxed, because I've come too long of a way to jack up my hair now lol!

Yeah, I don't blame. I need to find a stylist who uses a good lye relaxer. I wasn't crazy about Affirm at the last two stylists I saw last year and at this point, i don't think I know what a good relaxer is anymore. I want to try Mizani Mild for Fine hair but I would love to have a professional apply it to my hair. sighhhhhhhhhhh....I'm sick of this.

The same thing happened to me. My hair looked fabulous the first week and after I washed it was so dry. I am going to take some of the suggestions on the board and clarify and do moisturizing deep conditioners until it's back to normal.

My hair seemed a bit drier this time after my relaxer. I even called my stylist to see if he had used a different strength. I usually get Affirm sensitive scalp which is what he said he used this time. He did tell me that he left it on a little longer this time because of all of the ng. So, he may have over processed me a little. I'm not losing any hair even though my hair is very straight. I'm doing an aphoghee at this moment followed by a moisturizing cond. From now own I'm going to put my stylist on a timer and carefully follow how long he work my relaxer through. I don't want my hair overprocessed and thin even though I'm only getting 4 relaxers a year now.

i'm having the same prob, but wasn't sure if it had to do with me airdrying all the time.

can someone let me know if chelating and clarifying is the same thing? if so i will try this to combat the dryness.

thanks

I was having this problem when i used optimum multimineral. This relaxer worked great in the beginning but it does have calcium hydroxide in it and the calcium deposits will eventually dry the hair out over time. I have motions now and i mix the relaxer with 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil before applying it. the olive oil doesn't interfere with the outcome of the relaxer and afterwards my hair feels like butter:yep:

A clarifying shampoo is milder than a chelating shampoo...a chelating shampoo will go deep into the hair to remove mineral deposits from hard water and well water and product residue.

A clarifying shampoo will only remove product residue

If you've already tried a clarifying shampoo and your hair is still dry then you may need to use a chelating shampoo

thanks for the clarification! ii will look into a chelating 'poo. crap!! i'm not supposed to be buying anymore products.....oh well. this I need.

Your welcome... I use Kenra clarifying for my chelating poo but Redken cleansing cream gets good reviews here on the board too..if you put chelating in the search forums box you'll get lots of threads with reviews on clarifying vs chelating:yep:

Okayyy so that is confirmation that I probably need to walk away from yet another relaxer. It can't be healthy for me to keep switching like this. I am going to chelate tomorrow, do an oil rinse and deep condition.

Thanks for chiming in everyone. I think i will have to move to Mizani Mild for Fine Hair. I'm going to have to look for the PH thread to make sure that its not too high on the the ph list.
