their own hair care products?? I am seriously considering it...the problem seems to be I would not be able to make large batches (without adding the chemically...hehe...stuff to it) which would be fine to me. I spend all this money on stuff, maybe I could just make my own "Perfect" goodies

Any thoughts or is this absurd??

I have a pomade that I made that I use exclusivley on my hair. It gives me a great shine and is very moisturzing...especially when I use it on wet(or damp) hair. it It is in the Hair Recipe Board.

Funny you mentioned this. I called my boyfriend this morning to tell him I am going to try my hand at making my own hair and body products, and he will be my guiena (sp?) pig!!

I also agree with all the money I spend on products I might as well try making my own!

I think this is a great idea! Please keep us updated on your venture.

Well I've thought about mixing my own oils when I use all of my Wild Growth Oil. (I'm going to keep the bottle) I notice that Carrot oil and Jojoba oil are the best things for my hair. I think I'll add some rosemary oil too.

I am actually in the process of doing that myself but mass producing it to sell to the public. I already have a waiting list(Thanks to my sister and her clients...I ain't mad) on my next batch of my oil concoction that I've been using for well over a year. I am waiting on my preprinted labels now.

I'm actually kind of excited about it.

HI tekmommie...yeah, I have made some of mine stuff in the past on a lark, just mixing and matching. I had great results w/ just mixing premade products along w/ oils and stuff....my way. Now, as I've gotten more into herbs, EOs, clays, etc....I plan to make alot more of my own stuff, some for my mother, and perhaps somethings for my friends/more conservative family members. I think it'll take alot of experimenting to get everything just right wrt proper preservation techniques.

TsAngel...you should be excited. Let us know how it goes wrt seeling and feedback.

You guys are great, thanks for the encouragement!!

I a website with shampoo base and conditioner base. I am going to buy a sample of each, mix my concotions then let you guys know...who knows this may be the beginning of a new business venture...LOL...but very serious!

TsAngel, good luck and keep us posted.

Jamaraa, what are clays (for skin perhaps)??

smile.gif

Clays are just that...dirt! LOL However, these "dirts" are ones from specific sources that have specific healing properties. You can use them in facials, on your hair, as full body experiences, AND for medicinal purposes. Each type of clay has different properites....I personally LOVE Dead Sea clay (which is mineral rich and isn't a big on "drawing"). Clays can add or take away things.

Some clays are largely binders....they give your masks (facials, hair, body) and poultices (medicinal) weight and consistency. A two good examples of this type is kaolin (aka Chinese White clay) and "rose" clay. These are very gentle on the skin. (BTW, just for FYIs sake, kaolin is an ingredient in porcelin)

Other clays are "drawers"...meaning they draw oils, dirt, and other impurities from where they are applied. Some examples of these type are French Green, bentonite, and Fuller's Earth (aka as Multani Mitti). These tend to be very drying if used too often and IMHO should be mixed w/ gentler clays. Last thing you want is to dry yourself out and end up w/ MORE natural oil production!

Then there are the clays that have more of a mineral depositing action. Dead Sea, Rhassoul, and Moor Mud. The only "down" side to these are cost. Expensive, but worth every penny, IMHO.

Most times clays are sold in their dry form, but a few places sell it in the source water (called the brine). I've never tried the latter, so I can't say how well it works.

What I like to do is mix different types of clays to get specific actions at once. If I need to exfoliate, yet mositurize, I mix the clays, oils, EOs, etc....that give me those actions. So far, I've been VERY successful at getting the right proportions for my speicifc needs at a given point. I might add a little of this today and more of that tomorrow based on my specific needs. That's what I love about making your own stuff...you can do it for your specific needs and adjust accordingly.

i'm applying my own oil blend to my hair its essentially, castor oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, wheatgerm oil infused with herbs of hibsiscus, chamomile, nettle, elderflower, and cornsilk. It smells nice (appley-hibscus-y)and makes my hair so soft. I'm thinking of doing it in a pomade, and then working on conditioners from scratch - since the ones i love over here are being discontinued - and i cant be arsed to find new ones.

so, you go girl! I know that jessicurl from naturallycurly.com is selling gels, conditioners and shampoo bars like the business.

WOW Jamarra, that is some goooooood info. Now where do I start?? Did you give me a link already?? If not please do!

Thanks everyone!!

Hi Everyone,

I've been blending and experimenting with my own hair products for about a month now. Including, but not limited to jojoba oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil(love the tingle), aloe vera gelly, coconut oil, amla oil, amla powder, shikakai powder(heard about these two from a Indian co-worker)and WGO. I'm still mixing and experimenting to see what works best. When I think I've come up with some well tested keepers, I'll post them. Or, maybe I'll bottle and sell them!

Pandora...you've given me the opening for the question that I didn't quite know how/where to ask. Wrt Cathy Howse, I know she talks about needing a stimulant and a moisturizer in a conditioner. I'm curious to know if she has her ingredient list on her bottles. If so, is there anything like peppermint, rosemary, etc...? If it's not too much trouble, could you please post her ingredient list (LOL...I DID search, but didn't find it)? If I knew what was in her and that hairlady's stuff, I might have some ideas for one's own personal versions OR if there are better (cheaper) formulas.

Canuck (I'll assume that you are in Can or the UK...LOL): do you have an EOs in your mix? Since they are so readily available in places outside of the US (for cheaper too), IMHO you should add some. It think they'll really boost your brew. There's lavendar, rosemary, lemongrass, sage, rose, etc...to look into. Are you aiming for your oil to lighten the hair some?

Ebonylocks...sounds like an interesting mix. Both amla and shikaikai are good....if using those I'd use a large amount of coconut oil in whatever formula I made. Why? Well...all 3 work together well to not only help hair grow, but to darken the hair and keep it that way. (LOL....that's partly why so many Indian woman and men have undyed, yet dark hair into their later years). Are you also familiar w/ bringraj and brahmi? They are popular in vedic hair tonics too. Bringraj is considered the top herb in ayurveda for hair growth.

it is VERY simple to make your own version of her conditioner. on the hair recipe board there is a recipe for her conditioner given in her old version of the book,i will bump it for you! check it out. her conditioner has water, aloe vera protein, olive oil, jojoba oil, silica, peppermint oil, menthol, royal jelly bee and perservatives (i may have missed some other minor ingerdients but these are the main).i must admit her conditioner is expensive but has a lot of high quality natural ingredients and it is VERY thick.but using the recipe in her old book you can make your own and get more or ess the same results

Tekmommie,

I made a hair lotion (a recipe that I found somewhere):
2 oz olive oil or olive oil blend (mix with whatever oils you like best, such as virgin coconut, jojoba, macadamia nut)
1-2 tbsp melted shea butter or mango butter
2 oz liquid lecithin
4 oz water
Favorite essential oil or fragrance oil, if desired

I didn't use it for several days and when I opened it, it was black. I guess my preservative didn't do its job. It worked great on my hair initially, it almost had the texture of cream cheese icing.

No, I used rosemary essential oil and grapefruit seed extract. It did look good enough to spread on a cake. I probably should have kept it in a cool place.

i have done it!! i havent finalised the formula yet but i am close and the first batch works just as well as her dew. i will be using it for a few months and refining the ingredient list and add it to the recipe board when its the way i like it.

the first trial batch contains distilled water, castor oil, coconut oil(refined) and hair polish. i put this in an empty dew bottle, which is perfect cos this spray bottle actually mists instead of releasing copious amounts of liquid that wets the hair. amazingly, all the ingredients mix pretty well and leave my hair soft and with a nice shine

now, if i can just get some lanolin oil to add to it...

jamaraa,

i feel you about the oils, no i dont wish to lighten my hair (why camomile, right?), but bwoy, some of the oils get on my nerves in terms of scent, like lavendar, rosemary and chamomile. I am definately looking into rose and neroli though, since i like those. But i wanted to try a base of herbal infused oils first.

I have not gotten around to making a pomade yet, i really want to try the methylparaben as a preservative, like LUSH uses. The grapefruit seed extract is not bad, but after a couple of months, my product goes, also, for my sensitive skin, it really does not work a treat (although its good for cleaning toothbrushes).

I'm still dabbling in hair stuff, since skin stuff is a bit hit or miss for me!

i make my own products as well i have a couple of friends of mine who make bottles of oil for i charge them 10-15 a bottle because the eo are so expensive but i like it the only thing i hate is making coconut oil that takes too long
