I have been reading a few threads where some members mix their DC's and others separate?

What is the benefit of separating them? I am asking bc I am trying to simplify things as much as possible and so if I can cut down the time and steps that would be great. Also if protein helps moisture adhere to the hair would it not make sense to mix the two?

TIA ladies

You know I have done my treatments both ways and what I have found is that when my hair is in relatively great condition, mixing them seem to work pretty well and I do this to save time. My hair is able to hold onto moisture well, even with the addition of protein in the mix.

Now if my hair is having real issues like breakage from excess protein use, I get better moisturizing results when I separate the treatments. This way, I get to properly concentrate on giving my hair what it is craving at the time.

The same applies when my hair is suffering from excess moisture - I separate the treatments again to properly, effectively correct the issue at hand. I hope this makes sense to you stellagirl.

Thanks Aggie, this is exactly what I was looking for. I too also adjust my mix according to whether I need more moisture or more protein on a particular week.

I am just trying to work out the benefit of separating.

Thanks once again.

You are quite welcomed sg76.

As a natural, I can't use a protein dc alone on my hair. But I'm such the mixer though. I experiment alot too. I love Elasta QP but was turned on to Silk Elements (because of it's detangling properties) by JJamiah. So, I mix Elasta QP DPR Humectant, Elasta Mango Butter, Ion Extreme Moisturizer, Neutrogena Triple Moisturizing, Silk Elements, EVOO, Honey and peppermint oil.

I tend to keep my applications of Protein & Moisture Separate too.:yep:

Usally I will do my Protein Treatment and Directly Follow up with a Moisturizing Treatment.

The only time the two meet is if I am using a Product that is a Balancer i.e. AO GPB or something that states it's an equal mix of both protein & moisture.

HTHs.

my hair craves protein more than moisture. so i tend to co wash with a protein/moisture balance conditioner. when i deep conditioner i do them one at a time. but i have found two conditioners that moisturize and strengthen my hair and i love them. they are afroveda ashlii amala and kbb ll hair mask.

Aggie said it perfectly. :yep:
I add a little protein each time, but my DC's are heavy with the moisture.

Today I DC'd on dry hair with Alterna Hemp Hydrate mixed with Alterna Hemp Repair. It was about a 70/30 ratio. My hair LOVED it! Moving forward, I'm going to attempt to do a mix unless my hair rejects it.

Though, I'm wondering if some of the protein might be 'overpowered' by the moisture. For instance will I be doing my hair a disservice, by depriving it of protein, if I mix a light reconstructor with a very moisturizing DC, as opposed to doing the protein reconstructor separately.

I'm also a little concerned with exactly what products are safe to mix with one another. But I guess it'll have to be trial and error.

I notice some people said they mix Nexxus Emergencee into their moisturizing DC's weekly. I might try that one day.

I have been alternating protein conditioners with moisture conditioners each time I shampoo. I've been mixing these conditioners in a base of cholesterol, and adding a few tsps. of my favorite oils. I use the mix as a DC with heat.

For example:
Today I shampooed and DC'd with my moisturizing concoction of liquid cholesterol (6 heaping tsps),
Matrix Biolage hydrating conditioning balm-(you want moisturized hair-use this stuff!!(:lick: 3 heaping tsps,)
avocado and olive oil (1 tsp. each).
Hair felt so good...., but that's another post! lol:yep:

So next shampoo I'll use a protein conditioner like Mane and Tail following the same measurements as above mixed in with a solid creamy cholesterol and add the oils. I got this idea from Bronzeg- Chinablk on Youtube. Bigggg hugs to you girl! :kissing4: This has been working really well so far, so I'll just keep alternating between protein and moisture to keep it balanced for a while.

To make it a little easier, I've put my conditioners in a plastic bin, and labeled the mix-in conditioners with a M (moisture) or a P (protein) on the top with a black marker. That way I can tell at a glance which conditioner I'd like to mix in on shampoo day, and this should help me use up some of my seldom used 'pj stash conditioners' a little bit faster.

I have to add a little moisture to my protien treatments or a moisturizing rinse right before and leave a little in or it turns out hard. I'm slightly protien sensitive and can't do straight up protein on my head.

It depends on what I'm using, but most of the time I do keep them separate. The main protein treatment I use is Nexxus Emergencee and I don't want to chance messing my hair up (or wasting product) by mixing it with anything. I always follow it up with a long intensive moisture treatment.

Protein treatments like Emergencee I always do as a 2 step process where I do the Emergencee first, and then do my moisturizing dc. For dcing I do them together. I used to do the protein dc first and then rinse and do the moisturizing. I soon found out that it doesn't matter with my hair. My hair responds the same if I do them together or separate. Plus it is less time consuming.

My DCs (Aphogee 2-min and AO GPB) are already moisture-protein balanced. I do apply avocado oil on top of them for an extra protein punch. I don't follow up with anything after I use AO GPB, but I use KBB Deep Condish after Aphogee 2-min.

I pile them...my hair can't handle a lot of protein, it gets hard and brittle. My DC's are moisture for the most part. Right before I rinse out the DC, I add a little protein conditioner on top of the moisturizing one. I leave that on for like 5-10 min. Then I rinse both out.

Separate!! If i mix the protein with the moisture that defeats the purpose of replenishing the moisture after the protein is washed out.

I only dc with moisturizing conditioners/masks. When I use Aphogee's 2-Minute Reconstructor in the shower, I place a plastic cap on my head, leave it on for 2 minutes and rinse. That's as far as I go with protein.

I don't mix protein and moisture dc's. I'm not comfortable with doing that since I don't know how well the products will mesh. I do, however add an egg to my conditioners if I want the protein.

When I first started with hair care- I use to separate. Now I just save time by mixing. It works like a charm.
