Do We Really Need Leave In Conditioners??

Yesterday, I washed & conditioned in the shower with a cold rinse at the end. I left my hair alone. At night when my hair was completely dried I combed through my hair with no problems. I then added moisturizer to each section, threw in some rollers and went to bed.

Today the hair looks like the same as always. Basically no different than when I used a leave in and it is much SOFTER.

So why do we need leave ins? I am so confused. I feel like I wasted $$.

leave in's create a barrier between your hair, heat, styling tools and various elements in the air and air itself, as well as added nourishment to strenghthen and keep hair conditioned. I'm sure you will not see much of a difference in the condition of your hair immediately after not you stop using one, but over time you may start to see the effects of not using such as a protectant.

As far as hair not being soft or softer without, different leave in's produce different results. It's important to find just the right one for your hair type that will give you the results you are looking for, as well as protecting your hair.

ETA: Just thought of an analogy. I'd equate it to sunscreens and lotions for your skin...you don't necessarily need them, but imagine your skin, overtime, without them :-D

I don't think we need leave-ins. Before I joined this forum, I never used a leave-in, not even a moisturizer...and my hair still thrived.
The purpose of leave-ins are to just prevent breakage. They also permanently bond to the cortex increasing your hair's elasticity and strength...also protects the hair from heat.

I've always used a leave in and I didn't even know what it was for until I came here. LOL When I don't use one I notice a difference in the feel of my hair after using a cheapie. Not sure if I remember if I noticed a difference or not after using a more pricey brand.

I use it continuously to keep my hair protected and conditioned....just what relaxed hair needs.

This is why I use them. I read a book by a Tricologist(sp?) that explained why they should be used.

Thanks ladies. SO1913 makes a good point bc I would never stop using my sunscreen. I will keep them in my regimen.

Great analogy, 1913. :) I've always used leave-ins in my regime to give my hair extra protection from heat and elemental changes.

I don't use a leave-in anymore and haven't for many years. I just don't rinse my conditioner all the way out. I also put pure shea butter in after my hair dries.

I usually consider any product left in hair for the purpose of protection, conditioning, or moisture after washing a "leave-in".

Since my hair is relaxed and needs all the protection it can get, a leave-in conditioner is definitely a must have for me.

I absolutely have to have my Infusium 23, and some kind of cream leave-in (I use Nexxus Headress), because without it, my hair would be very dry and prone to breakage (especially the new growth).

Well I can't speak for others but I really need some sort of leave-in or else my hair will be all over the house.

DITTO. Natural, relaxed, braided, whatever, my hair needs SOMETHING in there after washing. . .

I think leave-ins are good for my hair because I don't use oil/grease moisturizers on my hair when it's dry. To me, a good leave-in has all of the softening and humectant properties of oil moisturizers without the weight.

I like leave ins...Although I haven't used one in a couple of mths (cuz I've kept my hair up). But once the weather breaks and I start wearing my hair down, I'm certainly going back to my leave ins. Also, they help to "revive" shake 'n go styles

I usually don't use a leave in, but I don't rinse out all of my deep conditioner. I just shower my head and count to ten, quickly, and that's it. That's my "leave in" :)
