I washed my hair today and tried blow drying it straight (keyword tried because it was so thick and dry after washing, it wasn't happening) and once I was done I ran it through a straightener so it could fit into a stocking cap, because without that it wasn't happening either, my hair was just too thick. I noticed that when I tried straightening it, the ends wouldn't straighten, they just stayed all kinky and tight like the rest of my hair. I tried looking this up and it seemed like I just needed a trim, so I decided to take a chance and trim, but then I stopped because I didn't feel confident with it. So was I right? Am I in need of a serious trim? I don't care if I messed it up by trying, net paycheck I'm gonna do the BC and train it. I know absolutely nothing about hair, so plz tell me what's going on, because I wanna make an effort to learn.

TajBabii711 - You may be right about needing a trim. What products did you use to shampoo/condition/blow dry/flat iron your hair? Do you have pics?

You might not, I suck at blow drying and straightening my hair, it always comes out poofy, crunchy and nasty looking at the ends. I can roller set one week and come out with beautiful smooth, shiny, soft hair all the way though to the ends then blow dry the following week and end up with crunchy dry ends then roller set the week after that and my ends are back to being beautiful... It may just be your technique

when you are blow drying, you have to concentrate on the ends and then move upward. the way how it works at a salon is the tension that is being used as well as the temp of the dryer.

you ends tend to get drier quicker than your roots, so work your way up. and make sure you have a light serum or heat protectant. don't use a ton of cream or leave-ins either.

I'd say trim them but also youtube how to blow dry hair straight.

You need to use a big round brush and like roll the hair up it. Then pull it down the hair with the blow dryer facing down the hair shaft to flatten the cutiles.
Use small sections

Sorry so hard to explain

You may not need one. Whenever I didn't blow dry my hair properly in the past, my ends looked dry, split and horrible. Even after flat ironing my hair would be a poofy mess. I wouldn't recommend trimming when your hair is like that. I would blow out and restraighten to really get a better idea.

The key for me was using a thermal round brush (the ones with holes) ,getting a professional quality blow dryer with nozzle (Conair Silver Bird only $40), and getting down the proper technique. Tension + high heat is needed to fully smooth cuticle and straighten kinks. These you tube vids really helped me:

Now when I straighten my hair comes out pin straight and frizz free. It is much easier to trim when my hair is like this because I can see how long it really is.

If you have kinky 4a/b hair like me then a round brush will be your hair's worst nightmare (tangles, snapping and breakage)...so consider whether or not you SHOULD blow dry at all, and if you decide to do it:

Detangle your entire head slowly and properly (you should be able to comb the hair through with a plastic bristle brush or detangling comb)
Apply your blow dry straight lotion and/or heat protectant (always use one!)
Start in small sections and blow dry slowly, focusing the nozzle down the hair strand

When I blow dry, I use a comb attachment and a great blow dryer.
There is no need to big chop if you are transitioning. Please research transitioning first, before cutting off your hair.
