Do I HAVE to bun? or will a ponytail suffice?

The whole point of the bun is that the ends are protected from the elements, ie. weather and brushing against clothes. I suppose if the ponytail is high enough it won't brush against your clothes but the ends will still be exposed. I don't always bun, sometimes I put it in a pony tail also. I try and mix it up as much as possible.

I agree with the above stament.. Although a ponytail will suffice if high enough, I personally prefer buns. It is especially great from hiding my ends from getting dry from the air exposure. I usually make sure my ends are well moisturized and sealed and then make sure they stay that way as long as possible by putting my hair in bun. Your best bet is probably to just put it in a bun.
