I ask because I read somewhere that alot of Naturals, not all, but some put a relaxer on their edges to keep them smooth, I guess they are only natural in the middle:ohwell:? So I guess they would be 90% Natural:perplexed I forgot where I read this but when I remember I will let you all know!

*If this has been asked before I do Apologize*

OMG... I would never do that to my hairline. It is not a healthy hair practice to have two different textures due to chemicals on your hair. The hailine is already fragile; and then to have it relaxed and meeting-up with the stronger natural hair is a recipe for damage. I keep my hairline smooth with anti-humectant pomade and my scarf.

I don't....that seems to defeat the purpose of being natural :nono:

If you have the right products and tools there is no need to do that....I am a straight up 4a and my hair smooths down beautifully using just water and a boar bristle brush. I will admit that my edges are kind of "trained" and that due to manipulation it is not as coily up front...but hey im not complaining. That works for me.

i most def. do not and would never EVA . i think i'd look retarded with straight hair on the outside and kinky/curly stuff on the inside .

You don't need to perm ya edges. (said in my best country girl voice)
Just use a little water, some kind of moisturizer or pomade, then tie on a scarf. You will be good to go!

Personally, I don't slick down my edges I just let the buckshots do what they whatever they want to.

Good luck!

But that would defeat the purpose...Relaxers always just stressed my hairline. When I want smooth edges I use a lil bit of water and mango butter.

Yeah I was going to say the exact same in the bolded......I could just see folk getting there panties in a bunch. Are you still "natural" once you change the texture?

I know color rinses for example don' t change texture.

No... I've heard it before but I wouldn't do it. How would you keep the relaxer from running onto the rest of your hair?

LOL!!! Ya'll responses is too funny! But it is the Truth!! I am really trying to remember where I read it & I thought that was crazy, I know it would look crazy, But what got me is that they were claiming to be natural but "Only" relax the edges & was giving hair tips to others.

Thanks Ladies!

I have an old friend who does that but I dont know what her hair looks like(Ive only talked to her on the phone over the past couple of years and when she came to visit me she had braids). She says she does it bc when she wears her hair pressed the edges are the first to revert so her presses last longer. I was thinking along the lines of what u ladies are saying but I didnt want to give unsolicited advice.

I have a friend that did that with her edges- she had straight weave in the middle and straightened the edges, her hair thrived with it- wanted to try it pre-LHCF but my hairline is the most fragile on my head and cannot handle ANY manipulation... it just about deals with colour.

OMG, no way! I just use gel. And even if my hair get naps on the edges when I sweat, so what...I mean, that's my hair texture!

Ok Ok i USE To perm my hair around the front and the back maybe just one row of relaxer or so i cant remember that was about 2-3 yrs ago when i would only were my hair out pressed if it wasn't in braids. But i never seen any damage it wasnt like i was laying thick piles of cream and letting it set for a while.

THIS WAS ALL B4 I LEARNED ABOUT LHCF AND HOW TO PROPERLY TAKE CARE OF MY HAIR.

as the others, i have found no reason to do so as long as i have a good moisturizer and a brush around im STRAIGHT

I think that would look wack to have straight edges and the rest in an afro. I would never do this. As already stated, the edges tend to be fragile.

Glad we stand in agreement. I remembered reading that some said that were still "natural" after doing this- totally defeats the purpose IMO. But looking at my texture I would look silly with straight edges and the rest kinky, coily, curly.

Umm, no. Just tie it with a scarf at night, or better yet wear a scarf all day. That's what I do. :yep:

Lol, when i first started transitioning i wanted to texlax the edges so i would look neat...but i have never bothered to get a relaxer and now i don't think i need to

If you relax your edges, would you still be considered natural? Doesn't seem like smooth edges are worth the trouble of applying chemical to your hairline.

I've seen this mentioned plenty of times & never understood it. I guess if you were a straight natural, I could maybe understand. I would think the edges would be the first to revert. I don't have a problem with my edges laying down, but even if I did, relaxing them would not be something I would ever consider.

My boyfriends mother does this and her hair looks fine. She wears her hair pressed straight all the time. Her hair is about bra strap, she seems to be one of those people who has had long hair all her life.

We were at an event one day and her hair was starting to revert, it was all chaka khan big looking. and I don't remember her edges looking weird or standing out or anything compared to rest of her hair.

I do understand the logic if you where ur hair straight all the time. I am transitioning and wear my flat ironed; my edges will nap up with a quickness while the inside is still bone straight.

My aunt is trying to grow out her relaxer but she touches up her edges... it doesn't look bad, but i still find it hilarious for some reason.
