I know they are the devil around here, but my all-black hair is so boring to me. Has anyone successfully highlighted her own hair? If so, do you have any tips/instructions?

I do my own highlights and it comes out well. The first time I did it I used a ColorShower from roundbrushhair.com and I got one of those caps with the holes because it is much easier to make sure you get the best results with the highlights. It came out really well but of course it was not permanent color so the next time I did it I used a cap again and used Dark and Lovely Brown and it was so pretty. I was upset that I didn't do my whole head but the color in my hair in my advatar is the Dark and Lovely Brown I like color and I just can't help myself. After I did the highlights I make sure that I but a lot of moisturizer on my hair and keep it conditioned well and I only use heat once a week. I like color and think that I will continue to color my hair.

Why don't you try baking soda/peroxide highlights? I have seen them turn out great and they're supposed to be gentle for your hair. I'm thinking about doing some myself...

Thanks Kat! Yours are very pretty! That's about the color I'm going for...nothing too golden.

If it's more gentle than dye, then I'll look into it. I'll do a quick search on here.

I always use African Pride highlighting kits on my hair, I haven't had a problem and I've been using them for years.

Henna will naturally highlight your hair. But if you don't care for that, I use pretty much any permanent color with the cap. I prefer painted on highlights, but they are hard to do yourself
