Didn't know that a moisturizer could dry out hair

It seems counter-intuitive when you think about it at first, but after going through many threads and moisturizers, I've understood this. The hay/straw feeling that some get from certain moisturizers are very interesting.

I have been through shescentit, KomazaCare, and I just started Bee Mine, looking for a replacement moisturizer for Afroveda Shea Amla Buttercream (with the smell being my issue), but I have yet to find something that doesn't leave me with hay hair in certain areas of my head. *Especially right behind my ears*

I really don't *want* to be a PJ :look: but c'mon. After BeeMine, I'm moving on to Qhemet and I really do hope that'll be my last stop on the moisturizer train.

How long did it take you guys to find your staple moisturizer, and what is it???

You may want to try roux porosity conditoner to see if it may help you retain moisture better with your leave-ins.

I've found that leave-in conditioners (such as Herbal Essence LTR) work better on my hair than moisturizers. The only moisturizer I really liked was ORS Olive Oil, but it seemed like it stopped working after a while.

I don't want to scare you, but it took me 7 years. I went through A LOT of products (I've tried almost everything)...still have plenty of products sitting on my counter. Name it and it's probably sitting in my closet :spinning:

Then God finally sent me an angel...now I use Oyin pomade, greg juice, and honey hemp.

I hope you find your moisturizer way before 7 years comes along. :lachen:

there are moisturizers that are oil based. and others that are water. If you're not doing so good with oil based...then you're just gonna have to keep looking for a more moisturizing one.

Im not gonna lie. It's hard. It was a while before i found one i liked. And i'm still not satisfied

it took a while a guess (though not 7 yrs... sorry lushcoils, glad you found something). maybe about 6-7 months. now my moisturizer consists of a home made mix of water, infusium, and veg gly (or a moisturizing cond if i dont have gly like HE HH). after i spray my hair with that i apply HE LTR on my ends only and then seal my whole head with oil. if i feel like i need more moisture then i skip the HE LTR and appy HE HH to the length and ends of my hair (not the roots, like the 1st 2 inches from the roots just get spray and oil) and then apply oil. my hair feel like butter after that.... FOR DAYS!!!

every so often (usually only in winter) my ends get even more dry, then i apply shea butter just to my ends and that solves the problem.

Can anyone explain why HS 14n1 is leaving my hair feeling kinda dry especially my ends? Just several days ago this was not the case....

Whew, I came in here thinking you were gonna talk about some Pink Oil moisturizer. It is really, really hard to find a moisturizer that you like and it does take awhile but I would suggest keeping up with your moisturizing DCs in the meantime.

could be the mineral oil or the glycerin. for me it was the mineral oil. my hair hated HS 14n1. bleh! i knew it wasnt the glycerin because my home made mix has it and my hair reacts well to other items with glycerin.

but for you it could be the glycerin because some people have issues with glycerin robbing the hair of moisture due to not enough moisture in the air

If you like the Afroveda, have you tried adding an essential oil to it. I think lavender works pretty well as a fragrance.

I thought this happens in the winter......

usually but i've heard people say it in drier climates though its not true for me. for example i live in az, southern az. 90% of the year we have 0% humidity.... so in situations like that it may be true for you... i dunno though, not a weather guru. like i cant explain why my hair does good with glycerin while other az ladies have issues.

I disagree with this. Right after my big chop, I only used Care Free Curl Gold Activator, and my hair was super soft. That was in the winter time-north of Chicago by the way.

Actually the very first product I used is my staple (at least the idea of it-by that I mean curl activator). It was the Care Free Curl product I mentioned above. The only reason I stopped using it is because I found hair boards, and I was influenced by them. It seemed as if because I am natural I am supposed to use certain products. Not the case at all.

I got on a ton of product bandwagons:wallbash:, and here I am almost three years later back to using curl activator (I'm using s-curl now, and I :heart2: it!).

That's a lot of good moisturizers that you have tried..The problem sounds deeper

I agree. I've said it before and I'll say it again-I did the exact same thing. I hopped around from one brand to another seeking some miracle product. Nothing worked. The problem was with my water source. Made my hair extremely overly porous. It just took me a while to realize that.

Hmmm.... okay, let me go down the line and further explain my moisturizers:

Shescentit Gillian Hair Butter: way too hard to spread through my hair. I tried it twice, but the consistency is impossible for me. It give me great shine, and I was thinking that maybe once my hair got longer (to the point where I can do some plaits at night) that I may be able to apply it better.

KomazaCare Califia Moisturizing Cream: didn't dig the smell

BeeMine Luscious Balancing Cream: right behind my ears I got hay hair, but everywhere else was okay.

I'm using Afroveda and it moisturizes well, but, again the smell has become an issue for me. I thought I could get past it, but I can't.

Since you ladies brought it up, I'm going to clarify soon though.

Ditto. Same here. I have used the LTR leave in, but I love love love Lacio Lacio. That's been a godsend for me.

Have you tried sealing in the moisture with oil?
Try clarifying to remove the hair of build up. You hair has to free of buildup to be able to absorb moisture properly.
Are you using heavy protein treatments in your hair? You may be experiencing protein overload.

I just leave some of my garnier triple nutrition conditioner or natures gate biotin conditioner in my hair after a co-wash and it dries incredibly soft, no additional moisturizers needed. Works much better than oils.

Traycee,

Your hair looks beautiful in your signature. I have yet to perform the search and destroy method I've viewed on Youtube, Thanks. My length is ear length and full of body.

I wash my hair weekly with AOHSR on Sundays

On Monday and Wednesday I co-wash with Garnier Moisture Works, rinse, then apply my moisturizer, and seal with EVCO.

I baggy every night

Thursdays I twist my hair and leave them in until Sunday.

(Just this past Sunday I did an Avocado Smoothie DC for 30 minutes too.)

My favorite moisturizer is hairveda whipped cream. I use the Shea amla too and I like the smell. I wonder if u could request a fragrance free version of this product? Worth a try
