Detangling Challenge

I fashioned small twists in my hair 23 days ago. On around the 12th day, I washed my hair with castile soap for the first time in my life, and because I was at my guy's place, I had no conditioner--leave-in or regular--to use afterwards. The next day, I realized that my twists had went from soft and luscious to almost loc'd and the problem worsened with each passing day. Even the ends were matted, and all the twists were hard, rough, stuck together, and dry from root to tip.

Dilemma.

1) I could try to take down and redo each twist ASAP. This was not really an option because I didn't have that kind of time (school had just begun) and because I was worried about the damage I would cause basically trying to unravel locs.

2) I could try to find some product that would moisturize and soften the twists into relaxing a bit so that the take-down process would be smooth.

I opted for choice 2. So, for the past week, I have been trying various detangling products and mixes. See my fotki (don't want to make this thread obnoxiously long). Three attempts so far (waiting to see how the third attempt will turn out).

I'm starting this thread because I plan to report back in it what works best, and because I want to solicit ideas. Any suggestions in regards to good moisturizing/detangling products? Any other ideas for how to take these loced twists down?
