I've been deep conditioning for 50 minutes. On one of the posts I read that it's damaging. Is this true?

How long should I keep it in? I always thought that keeping the conditioner in for a long time ensures that it gets absorbed...

I'm thinking of just doing it for 20 or 25 minutes... is that good enough?

50 minutes with heat seems a bit much. I think 20 would be sufficient. I remember reading in a book that the author instructed to deep condition for 30 minutes, but reapplying the conditioner every 10 minutes. Going for 50 minutes straight, in my opinion, would probably be more damaging.

I usually follow the manufacturer's recommendations concerning time - usually between 15-30 minutes (no heat). Ten to fifteen minutes would be ample time for me with heat.

I don't think that it's damaging. It may be a waste of time though.

I've slept in my conditioners whenever I got lazy with no problems noted afterwards. 25 - 30 minutes with heat should be sufficient.

That's what I do.

I think 50 minutes with heat is a bit much. If it was without heat, I would say no problem.

With heat 30 min max, without 5min to overnight but now for the new year I will be plastic capping it with no sitting under the dryer period. I read here about the article about sabaceous glands getting damaged with sitting under hair dryers well I didn't know that and won't be doing it all this year. No Heat! this year

No Heat! this year one more thing just warm your conditioner before you apply it!

I'm back to experimenting in this area. The other day I put on my bonnet dryer for about 9 mins, turned it off and left bonnet on, a small vacuum formed, 17 min later vacuum released (when I noticed, surfing Internet) then I rinsed. My hair felt great after completely air drying. I don't know yet if it was due to the new way to deep condition or the fact I used Elucence products for the first time (Yea, Elucence!

) or both. Time will tell.

Edited to add: When using any form of heat to help the conditioner to penetrate the shaft it's a good thing to allow the hair to cool down to about room temp before rinsing with water that isn't hot. This allow the cuticle to close back before rinsing the conditioner out.

I start out under the drier w/deep conditioner and a plastic cap for 10-15 minutes but then I cover it with a towel to hold the heat in and rinse maybe 45 min later. My hair feels wonderful when I do that. I don't think it's damaging.

I put the conditioner on my hair and cover it with a plastic cap for about an hour, and it seems as if my hair has been agreeing with me. To each their own.
