...how do you deal with the soreness that new growth causes? I'm not natural but I've got TONS of new growth that hurts like crazy. :( I'll be getting a touch-up soon (which will be a welcome relief). I, personally speaking, have a difficult time understanding how hard I'd have it if i stopped getting perms altogether. Hope I don't sound naive, but whenever I see someone with natural hair, although beautiful, I say to myself: "Hmmm, I wonder if her scalp is sore".

Help me out, beautiful natural ladies. :look:

My scalp hasn't ever been sore while growing.I try to be as gentle as I can w/ my hair generally. I have only had 2-3 relaxers in my life(including the 1 jehri curl when I was like 11ish) I am very gentle while detangling, which I do in the shower w/ a k cutter and conditioner. If I comb while dry, I only use my fingers. I am sorry to hear that you are having some sensativity issues though.

becuas eone is natural doesnt mean her scalp is always sore cos all of the hair is natural. the only time my scalp is sore is when i dont detangle gently or when i try to comb my hair when its uber dry. when i was either relaxed or natural :)

Oh, okay. It seems that I and most of my relaxed friends get sore scalps. I wonder why that is the case. I guess I just figured it happened to everyone. I'm constantly oiling and moisterizing too so dryness doesn't play a factor.

Strange. :ohwell:

When i was relaxed i do remember the sore scalp and too thought it was par for the course. Review your regimine, What products do you use. My sore scalped stopped completely when I got off petrolium products. It was blocking the pores and made the surrounding scalp tender. I suppose any product that does not allow air through could do the same if resting on your scalp. Check for a build up. Your are sore because something is wrong. Your skin is letting you know. Check yourself for harsh handling of your hair also.

Also your dry scalp can be due to diet and blocked pores. Take a suppement like flax seed and make sure you have a balanced fat in your diet. I too was raised thinking I had dry scalp but it was symptoms not dry scalp. Keeping it clean and keep the products off of it. The relaxer will change the chemistry of your scalp and can also make it sore and no amount of products can combat it if yours is sensitive to relaxers. You will have a different head as a natural.

I didn't experience soreness when I was transitioning, but my head was sore for about a week after I BC'ed. Hair goes into shock after its been cut. I cut off about 12 inches of hair and stopped using a comb so my hair was going in all these different directions instead of being combed down like it was for sooooo many years. I think the drastic haircut was the culprit for me. Everything is cool now.

well, my scalp is sore when my hair is going through a spurt, ive noticed....but its nothing a little tingly conditioner or soothing oils cant fix...its not hurting 24/7....in fact, i used to have much bigger scalp issues when i relaxed! my scalp was always sore and i would be scratching and not know that i broke the skin until water hit it....now THAT was painful :(

The ONLY time my scalp is sore is the day that I got a perm. I couldn't even lay my head down on the pillow at night. Reason #101 why I am transitioning, lol.

My scalp was sore initially when I transitioned and first big chopped. I always assumed it was because my hair follicles were healing after recovering from so many years of relaxer damage (I never did a good job of basing my scalp to properly apply relaxer, etc.). The soreness went away eventually and I haven't ever felt sensitivity in my scalp since.

you know what else might cause soreness?? the fact that the relaxed hair is actually weighing the natural hair down....its pulling on the newgrowth, until you relax that...so, maybe thats what causes the soreness...

so, if we dont having anything weighing down our newgrowth, then that wouldnt be a problem right????

oh snap, im so logical! prolly wrong though :D

i have had soreness when going thru a growth spurt....not all the time but i have defintely had it and headaches

regardless of being relaxed or natural, your hair still grows in virgin hair. SO if anything it would hurt everyone. I get them everyonce in a while as well. I dont know if its becasue of growth or not.

Almost never have scalp soreness unless someone rips through my hair trying to detangle, but I always detangle myslef with conditioner or leave in.

I used to get a sore scalp often when relaxed. But since I've been natural I've only experienced it once, which was yesterday.

I thought this too. Before I finally textirized after 18 weeks my scalp was sore in various places. But it might have really been from constantly messing with my new growth curlies. Somebody remind me why I keep relaxing again

I use Motions Moisterizing lotion and Wildgrowth hair oil. I also use shea butter because it makes all the new growth much softer. I mix the combinations in small doses. The thing is, I don't use those products until i'm about 7 weeks into an 8 week perm. I don't think I'm overdoing it... maybe I am. I exercise regulary and drink plenty of water. There seems to be minimal build-up. The soreness never goes away. :ohwell: I'm almost used to it, but if i can alleviate the tenderness that would be wonderful.

I haven't experienced it either. I only experience soreness or tenderness after relaxers because I either itched before puttin it in. Don't let that discourage you from being a natural. You really don't know how your natural hair will be until after you cut off the perm or completely transition.

I am not familiar with motions ingredients but wild growth does have some heavier oils in it. Your natural hair growing in should not hurt you other wise our bodies would be screeming from all the natural hair growing in all over. The relaxer will effect your scalp no matter what. It is a chemical. There is truth to the under scalp build up of chemical also. I only no that I had dry scalp symtoms when relaxed but no more as a natural and even after going natural the heavy petrolium contributed to the dryness and soreness. When all that was gone no more sore scalp. Soreness is telling you something. I am no expert just been there and done that. Hope you solve the problem.

I know what youre talking about because I experienced the same thing when I had a relaxer but my hair doesnt hurt from growing in since i've been natural. I think it was the two different textures at one time or something because now I have no problem with that. I mean my head would just hurt when I got alot of newgrowth to where I felt miserable until I touched up. Hmmm... that's interesting now that I type it out and read it.... things that make ya wonder. -- jainygirl
