Creating your own phonytail

Hi all,
I remember some years ago when a stylist took a regular "phonytail", placed some solution onto it (I think it was a setting lotion), put large rollers into it and placed it into the microwave for a few seconds.

When she took it out, the "phonytail" was then curled. The curl stayed and did not fall. I wore it for 3 days.

I was wondering if this process might be applicable for times when one can't find a phonytail with the correct texture or pattern.

Is anyone out there familiar with this process?

Kind Regards,
Mufasa

Mufasa,

I'm not but what a Brilliant idea! I will try that on mine. Thanks for the tip!

P.S. If the microwave melts my ponytail into dust, may I seek reparations from you??? LOL...Just kidding!

I saw your hair journal AZ, and I think your hair looks great. I remember the before pictures and you are coming along very well.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Last week I got my first phonytail.

Two things bothered me about it
- it felt so heavy (I was certain that it was going to rip some hair from my scalp by the end of the day) and
- it didn't look natural (the hair is so straight and there's much more hair on it than anyone would reasonably expect me to have).

I went back to the BSS and bought some human hair weave with texture to it. I cut the pocket off of an old, dark brown silk blouse and sewed 3 rows of weave on by hand. I then ran some elastic through the top seam so that it even has a built in scrunchie. It took me about 30 minutes. I love it! I can do the Adrienne baggie trick and stick my hair in my silk pocket phonytail. It's lighter, it looks so natural and on the days that I go out with wet hair, I can wet the phonytail too - it dries with a nice wave that looks like my hair looks when I do a braid out. I still have quite a bit of weave left so I'm going to make second one and braid the hair on it.

This doesn't answer your question but it was my solution to some of the issues you are having with your phonytail.

Hi Cheveux,

Thank you for responding - what you have done sounds really neat! Now I really have more questions

What is your hair type? Are you texturized? What kind of texture did your weave have? Was the texture of this weave similar to your own by itself or did you have to process it somehow to match the texture of your own hair?

Kind Regards,

Hello Mufasa

,

I'm very pleased with it. My hair is 4a/b. My last retouch (March) was underprocessed so I'm more or less putting myself in the texturized category. The weave is human hair with wave pattern similar to if you did a braid out. There are various textures at the BSS and I chose the one closest to my hair texture and color. I didn't need to process it in any way.

The silk pocket as a hair harness is also much lighter (weight-wise) and causes less frictiion on my real hair than the weave netting and drawstring on the drawstring phonytail. And I couldn't deal with that extra drawstring elastic. Where do people put it? Mine kept popping out from under my scrunchie.

I can roller set it, braid it or tuck it under with a bobby pin for more versatility. I'm sure at some point it will register with the drawstring ponytail manufacturers that some of us have texture to our hair, but I couldn't wait. Maybe there are some out there already - but, for me, that would mean buying it online and I need to see the color against my own hair to make a good match.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Feel free to send me a PM.

Now that's what I'm talking about! A lady after my own heart...I'm like you...when I can't find what I want I get creative and make my own. I've been looking for a ponytail that looked natural too to give my hair a rest. Thnaks for the directions! I'll let you know how it turns out...

A compliment from you, sweetcocoa, goes a long way! Happy to provide just a touch of inspiration. Let me know if you'd like me to post some pics and I'll try to do so. The other nice thing about this creation is that it gives me something to mess with other than my own hair - so it truly gives my hair a rest.
