So, I have been looking for someone to do a lovable sew in. Since I am new to the area I started by looking on-line. I know that I am late, but has anyone ever used the "craigslist" beautician?! Maybe I am just paranoid, but I envision some cute petite lady coming to my door, I open it and she is followed by some big burly man that sells me into sex slavery...or I get robbed nonetheless...Let alone what could happen to my hair :-)

So, would you ever use a beautician you found on Craigslist? Especially the ones who say they will come to you...

I personally wouldn't and I'd wonder why they're coming to you. Good stylist in my opinion can at least rent a chair out of a salon, or have a salon in their home. How could they travel with all of their equipment etc.? It just doesn't sound right to me. My motto is that it's better to be safe than sorry.

I found the lady who does my sew ins and my braids on Craigs list. I love her, never had a bad experience with her. She's doing my braid next month ( if I can get an appointment, shes always booked solid). Someone else on this site however did have a bad experience with her.

My aunt had a stylist for 10 years and her "thing" was that she came to you. She had a very large clientele of women who worked hours that made it hard for them to come into a salon. She did her hair on Sunday evenings and other times that most stylist don't work.

I completely agree. Something about craigslist just doesn't sit right with me. I would err on the side of caution and you dont want a setback

I think that's great if you're able to find someone that comes to you. After all celebrity stylists go to their clients homes when needed. But I personally think a stylist should have a reputation and/or very trusted references/client base so that you aren't going into a situation blind. With a reputable stylist/salon you know their licensed to do hair (and it's usually posted somewhere visible in a shop), they have a client base, they're established to some degree, you can walk in at any time and see the work they produce, and can probably talk with their clients about their services as well. You don't know anything about this person. Google them if you're really interested in using this person and do your due diligence by ensuring their licensed to do hair in your state. Do they have a website? People are crazy and for me personally, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Personally, I wouldn't mind having a stylist come to my home as an added convenience, but I'd feel a little better knowing that stylist had their own shop/chair somewhere else as well. When in doubt, go with your gut. I'd just be skeptical of anyone advertising a service to come to your home on Craigslist.

Check out Angie's List as I heard that's better.

The woman that did both the weaves in my Fotki is someone I found on CL. :yep:

I ended up going with her because she had a website with pictures of her work, and she was super professional.

Hmm... maybe I need to list myself on Craigslist... but I don't want any weirdos coming to my house (that already don't have business here...LOL).. and I don't want to go to anyone else's house... so there went that idea!!!

LOL!

LOL, I think that's my issue, the coming to the house part and not knowing them and/or their work from Adam. That just sends up a red flag.

I found my cornrow lady and braider on Craigslist. Awesome job every time. What I love most, is that she listens to my requests and is not "heavy handed"

I used a hairstyler from craigslist. I wasn't fully happy with the work. I suggest if you do use CL, make sure you see pictures of their work, so you can make the best decision for yourself.

I did that one time and i swear it will never happen again. I found a lady that way to do my tree braids, and nevertheless as soon as i got home my hair was shedding something aweful, and i ended up taking them down the next day. Dont get me wrong, she was a sweet lady, but had no skills doing hair. Oh i almost forgot! She mentioned while doing my hair that she has stolen pics offline before! :wallbash: :ohwell: :perplexed :nono:

Be very wary of going that route .

One great sew-in experience from cl- I went to her house, but
couldn't get a hold of her again. The second recent experience I went
to her and she did not handle my new growth well. I found a bunch of
knotted hair and I'm sure breakage when taking it down after 11 days.
I was pissed. How can you mess up cornrows? They looked nice, but
something went wrong. I'm glad it was just a minor setback.

Hey, Alot of the Craig's List stylist actually are stylist in salons but just advertise there. Just like everyone else was saying...look for pictures, if they have a ton of pictures, that is usually a good look...if they just have one picture I wouldn't trust it.
Its not safe to necessarily go to someone's house, but same as someone coming into your house. Trust your instinct

I was thinking about a craigslist stylist to do my sew in. If you have qualms couldn't you ask her for references and a few pics of her portfolio?

I advertise on craigslist. I offer to come to their homes. I bring all my supplies. Im a normal person :)

somewhat :look:

I guess you just have to go with your instincts...but living in one of the most violent cities in the nation...i'm weary. i'm gonna stick to a salon now, but maybe go the CL way next time...with plenty...i mean PLENTY of research!

I have used a weave stylist from CL but she was on BHM(Unique Monique). But I dont trust anyone coming to my home and knowing where I live at. I went to her home instead to get my hair done and thats where she would do weaves at.

Mostly what i look for in stylist from CL is someone with photos, that does hair at their salon(not a home)---it just I cant go back to the manager and complain if I get my hair done at their home or my home(not that I would complain)---Most of the home stylist that I have went to I havent really been happy with.

There many stylist that use CL as a way of advertising because they either dont have a website.

I referred a friend to the CL stylist and she went a few weeks ago for a sew-in. Why she was in the chair, she and stylist start chatting, and so she tells her that I recommended she try her. The stylist stopped what she was doing and said

"That girl got alotta hair!"

She wasn't lying!!! :lachen:

I would, but I would treat it like any other new salon/stylist and require pics of their work, references and a consultation. A website is a big plus.

Matter of fact, I'm looking for one now to do a sew-in for me...I may have found one.

I don't trust craigslist or myspace stylists with my hair. I'm sorry, there may be good stylists out there advertising, but in my experience, they never seem to have pics and if they do, it's not of their own work.
I prefer to be referred to a stylist by a source I trust.

I did it once and was so disappointed. My hair was sewn-in and the weave turned out to be quite thin. It turns out she just sewed a singular track on each cornrow.

If I had to do it again, pictures would be a necessity and I would need references.

I did it before and it worked out. She was a cosmetology student. I went to her a few times. She only charged me $35. The girl ended up living right around the corner from me two streets away which was really convenient. We were around the same age and knew a lot of the same people so I felt comfortable. She wasn't a total stranger.

The only con was that I could tell she was just learning. I mean the weave was decent and she did a better job with the braiding that I can but she wasn't well versed in other techniques. Like she did the basic snake braid pattern, etc. I was telling her how to do this and how to do that. But I've been to a stylist in a shop before that wasn't up to date on weaving techniques. She followed my directions well though.

I had her do a few basic curly weaves for me (which is typically what I wear) no cutting or styling involved. I did my own tweaking when I got home. I wouldn't go to her for something intricate or detailed though. Then again that was a few years ago and she may have honed her skills by now. Maybe I should find her number. :scratchch

A nifty thing about the state of California is that you can search and see if your potential stylist/salon has a license and any infractions. I think I may have found a new stylist due to this feature. Even though it's not necessary in Cali to have a license for braiding, weaving, etc, I still like this feature.
