Sooooo I got braids on May 29, 2009. They were for my vacay and I thought I would wear them through July 4th holiday. Well that didn't work out as planned. The quality of hair wasn't the best, my BSS SUCKS!!!!!! So I decided to take them out...that's when the problems happened. I had the darndest time taking them out and was getting so frustrated that I started cutting them out haphazardly so I could go to bed. As a result, I cut my own hair TREMENDOUSLY...

It's my own fault, so I take the L for this. I've never really tripped about my hair being "too" short, I wore short hair for most of my 20s. But since I've been on the hair growth thing, this would be seen as a MAJOR setback. But as a transitioner, I wonder if this could be a blessing in disguise.

So essentially, I went from this...

to this...

(Looks alot like the plant huh? LOL) The pic really doesn't do it proper justice, it's kinda wild and cute...

Here are some other pics to give you an idea of the length...

So I began to think whether or not I should go ahead and BC and get it over with. For the past two days I've been looking on the forum and at YT trying to psyche myself up for possibly doing a BC. So I wet a section of hair (the section I chose was probably not the best indicator of how much I would have to cut, but I had to go back to work) to see how much NG I had, here's what I saw...

So I need some advice and/or answers to the following questions....

  • Should I go ahead and BC?
  • If I don't BC, what are some styling options? All I've really perfected recently are roller wraps...LOL I don't even have enough hair for phony ponies!!!!!!! :nono:
  • At this point in my transition, can I use stuff Miss Jessie's products or will they do nothing for the 2" or so of relaxed ends?
  • Can I do Dr. Akbari's Afro with relaxed ends?
  • Anyone want to take a guess as to my hair type? I'm thinking somewhere in the 3 family headed on to a 4, so like 3b or 3c maybe?
  • Based on your guess of my hair type, what products would you recommend?
Not that I care, but people will FLIP OUT if I end up with a TWA. I think I would have mixed feelings about it too (mostly shock). I can deal with shorter sides, but I would really like some length on top...

Thanks in advance for your suppport and suggestions!

If you are not sure about BCing then don't. You have enough hair to do some braid outs and twistouts that would come out really cute because of your length.

I have no clue what your hair type is because it's not obvious in the pictures and I think you need a couple more inches of hair (at least) to be able to get an idea.

As far as products, Miss Jessie's and all that may work and they may not. It depends on your hair's charactersitics and the look you are trying to achieve. Stick with what is working right now and if for some reason it stops working, then try new things.

Your hair is really cute though. I say enjoy it in its present state for a while.

Hey! I didn't know you're transitioning. Congratulations.:yay: I agree with blksndrlla and MSA, don't BC unless you are absolutely sure that's what you really want to do.

I can't really answer your other questions but maybe you can try a straw set for a cute style option. Or maybe use perm rods to do an afro?

Good luck!

I would take the plunge and BC, it get's you to the promise land quicker and easier IMHO.

This is from a person who BC'd from midback to 1/2 inch fro.

You can always rollerset as well. Do what you feel most comfortable with. Braid and twistouts would look fierce on you.

Good LORD...you made my heart sink to my feet...LOL

I hadn't really planned to BC. I planned to do mini BCs along the way...but obviously plans can change.

It's hair and it will grow back, I just haven't had to deal with hair like this in a while. It's too short to do what I used to do and too long to do some other things.

BCing would make it easier and I could get on with my natural hair care journey that much quicker...I am not going to BC until pay day, so I have another week to make a final decision. Unless I get scissor happy before then...LOL

Thanks for the suggestions so far...

I think I'm going to wash and rollerset tonight when I get home to see what I'm working with regarding my texture and length. I will take more pics...

Whether or not to BC is a very personal choice.
If I were in your shoes, I would probably go ahead and BC the back half of my hair and leave the length on the top.

Your hair looks like it's an excellent length for twistouts straw sets and flexirod sets All of these can also be picked out into a fro.

you can achieve an afro if you braid or twist it first and then pick it out.

Sounds right to be.

You might like bee mine curly butter.
Coconut oil is always good too.

Like msa said, don't BC if you're not sure.

If you choose not to BC, get more braids or twists... or wig it out.
