Why people with type 3 hair have silkier looking softer braids than people with with type 4. i know people with type 4 hair their braids feel like a broom almost
It seemed to me like type 3 hair frizzes quicker in cornrows while type 4 hair lays down longer. I have a little cousin who wears cornrows for a week at a time and they stay neat (for the most part)....my daughter's type 3 hair is frizzy after 2 days!
Dejuan, if hair is well moisturized (and I don't mean wearing a layer of grease) I mean moisturized so oil penetrates it, it'll have a smooth, shiny look to it when braided. My hair is in micros and the extension piece is indeed shinier and straighter than my own hair. And even though I used equal amounts of hair, it's not easy for most people to tell where my hair ends. When I wash it, because of shrinkage and the braided part beyond my hair unraveling, you can see my hair. But otherwise it's not easy to.
With that said, Type 3 hair is a lot straighter than Type 4 hair and so serum does travel a little further up the strands than it does our hair type. So it does appear shinier than Type 4 hair. But if it's long and isn't moisturized, it would get frizzy too.
It's a shame you don't live a little more eastward. I'd love to wash, condition, moisturize your hair and leave it to "marinate"
under a plastic cap overnight...then braid it or twist it in a way that it doesn't show any of your "bad" spots...thus give you something to smile and be proud about. And if you think I'm way too confident about this in my limited knowledge of hair care, just you wait till I learn more and begin to really know what I'm talking about. I'll be a dangerous force to reckon with.
Maybe you need a deep conditioner or a hot oil treatment. I've seen some people with type 3 hair in braids and it looked and felt like straw.
My hair is type 3 and my braids last a week with no frizz. Also, a cold water rinse will help the scales lay flatter.
Have you tried WGO or Frizz-Ease? What do you put on your hair before, during, and after the braiding process? Do you use conditioner? Are you using a shampoo with SLS or any of the two types of ALS? What do you put on your hair at night? Sleeping on a cotton pillow case with nothing on your head will not only dry your hair out, but will make it frizzy. I'm not saying morph into a satin bonnet drama king, but there are "skully" caps that you can put on your head to keep the hair smooth. And those weird head things men put on that make them look like farmers/sheiks. You could try one of those.
Dejuan, whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis? Who said anything about a greasy mess? I happen to be that weirdo that went almost two years without using a leave-in on my hair. I can't stand greasy, sticky hair. Which is why penetrating oils are my latest fascination.
Still too early to sing praises of my latest experiment but watch this space...
So back to your cornrows... They would be silky and shiny if your hair was in good condition. And Licutiexx seems to know what I'm talking about. When hair is soft (ie moisturized) and healthy and you braid it, the braided part looks nice and shiny to me. Hair has got to be very dry not to look nice when braided. Pressed hair shines better than natural coily/curly hair simply because it reflects light better. And when you braid, the hair is somewhat stretched so it should appear shinier, IMO.
I tell you what, instead of comparing your hair to others' hair, compare your hair now to your hair before. Take pictures as you go along so you can monitor your progress. When you see the shine your healthier hair will have, you will begin to appreciate your hair better. Type 4 hair has unique characteristics and it is beautiful in its own right. Get to know your hair (not anyone else's). Learn what works best for you. Enjoy the journey to self-discovery... The more you learn, the easier it'll be to embrace what you have.
Dejuan Type 4 hair is actually very soft. It doesn't reflect light as well as type 3 but it is still very soft. Nothing close to a broom. That's signs of damaged, dry hair, not type 4 hair. If your hair feels dry and strawlike then you definately need to look into new products (they don't have to be greasy), but more importantly taking better care of your hair. Treat it like its precious almost. don't ever rake a come or pick through it tearing through the tangles. I used to do this all the time, now I'm way more gentler. Make sure it's always conditioned. Use a satin pillowcase or one of those skull cap things that Bodicea mentioned. You can find them for cheap at Walmart. cotton pillowcases rob the hair of moisture and cause breakage. When you shampoo your hair try and use a gentle shampoo and concentrate on the scalp, not the actual length of the hair and especially not on the ends. I always used to wonder why my hair was so damaged looking and didn't grow and it's no wonder with all the abuse I put it through. It seems obvious now
but it took finding hair boards like this to finally get it.Type 4a and 4b hair looks the best in braids in my opinion.
yeah but every time i have oils in my hair its still greasy you guys dont understand I hate oils with a passion. My hair is much stronger without anything on my hair until when i wake up in the morning. Maybe its not the hair type maybe its the thickness of the hair strands that make it feel hard to me.
Dejuan, try jojoba oil with a few drops of rosemary essential oil and lavender essential oil. Apply it to your hair while it's wet. Put on a plastic cap when your hair dries and and sleep in it. (Works best if you put your hair in braids for the night -- easier to comb in the morning.) In the morning take your cap off and allow your hair to dry as much as possible still in braids (coz it will feel a bit damp when you take the cap off). Your hair shouldn't feel greasy the way you're used to it, but it'll be shiny and soft.
But if you truly don't want to try any oil, then perhaps this might work for you: After washing your hair (CON shampoo is a good choice) and then deep conditioning with a moisturizing conditioner for about 20 minutes under a dryer, rinse your hair, using as cool a temperature of water as you can stand. ACV added to your final rinse water isn't a bad idea either. Once your hair is completely rinsed, do not towel dry. Apply an anti-frizz serum. I've used John Frieda and L'Oreal and loved them both. Make sure your strands are nicely coated and still very damp. When your hair dries, it won't be greasy but it'll feel smooth and soft. I know you don't like to braid your hair (or don't know how to) but your hair will be more manageable if you braid it while it dries. You will still be able to comb it into an afro afterwards since you're not pressing it, but it won't tangle or break as much as if you didn't braid it. The serum will also help in making the comb glide. And you'll have a wonderful shine.
Serums don't work for everyone but it doesn't hurt to give them a try. That's how I believe I succeeded in locking in moisture when I didn't use leave-ins.

Which oils have you tried? They all have different properties. Some absorb better than others. I agree with nonie's recommendation of 100% jojoba oil. That stuff is awesome!!!
