In terms of protective hair styles, which one of these is better or will they both do the same thing?

i think that they'll do the same thing IF and only if they are properly taken care of coz wit braids u have knots to consider and with cornrows there's the chance of a receding hairline which may be caused by adding extensions to the cornrows /images/graemlins/smile.gif but if they are taken care of i find getting braids easier to accumulate length coz i jus leave my hair alone for 2 months and get at least an inch : /images/graemlins/trampoline.gif and i cannot be bothered wit cornrows coz my hair starts to stand out within a week of gettin them done which means that i need to renew them often...

p.s. what are box braids coz i asked this before but i dont think i received an answer

Ngaa, box braids are also known as extensions. Cornrows are braided close to the scalp; box braids extend from the scalp. Some people do them with their own hair, but others add either human or synthetic hair to add length. HTH.

Cornrows and braids are good but like Ngaa said, you can keep braids in for longer, butttttt cornrows allow you to wash your hair on the regular /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Box braids I thought are the same as regular braids.

Thanks all, I know what the difference between braids and cornrows are I just wanted to know which one is better and will cause the least amount of stress to your hair. I gather from responses that it is easier to keep braids neater longer than cornrows...

The way I see it... I personally think cornrows are better. If you let the stylist start the braid with your own natural hair then add hair as she goes along,(more natural looking) your hair line should be in good shape. plus,,,

with cornrows after your hair is braided, there is really no pulling ( what are you pulling on) also,

You keep cornrows in for a shorter period of time which means you get to give your natural hair more TLC... Yaaayy
I am not really into braids/cornrows but i've had then in the past, when I took my braids out, my hair was dry, veerry dry, as opposed to taking my cornrows out, (note*I had always kept my scalp lubricated both ways) my hair looked pretty, black, shiny, crinckly and most important HEALTHY (key word).. My fiance's friend was like you should wear your hair like that, Although i rolled my eyes up, In my head I was like how nice!

nicky u mentioned that yo hair was dry after takin braids down, apart from keepin scalp lubricated did u use a braids spray on the hair and did u deep condition the hair, mayb next time u cud deep condition yo hair lik londongirl does wen her hair is in braids /images/graemlins/smile.gif

i don't think one is any better than the other. they're just different options. i've only worn individual braids precisely because i could wash them as often as i wanted, which was usually once a week or every other week. i wore them for three months at a time.

ngaa,
hey girl, I had micro braids several times (picture w/ the wavy hair)about 4x, and when I did wash and deep condition the first time around they slipped out of my hair, like ,dramatically...!!!. boy was I pissed! However to all you braidwearers, I was thinking about getting them again but, you know what I'll post a thread

a lot of pple seem to be gettin a lot of slippage wen they wash them /images/graemlins/shocked.gif i dont kno, since my hair is natural i'm gessin that that may be the reason that they dont slip as much and also mayb coz of the kanekalon hair that i use /images/graemlins/confused.gif

nikki how did u do the deep conditionin and what product did u use coz the deep conditioner that i have is a creme one and i'm afraid that if i use this then it'll remain white after i wash it out.

with the braids, I conditioned w/ Nexxus Humectress then Used Optimum conditioner as a rinse... I also sent a post paging you,,, answer wil ya!

cornrows are all good. Cause it seems that it grows hair better. I mean retain more length.

I know cornrolls takes some peoples hair out on the edges but braids can do the same. I guess it just depends on how tight you have them.

But isn't it true that if you use preventative maintenance on your hairline it won't fade away???

I know alot of people use vitamin e, rosemary oil or ORS temple balm to restore their hairline and if u use these items on your hairline before it fades away, it will prevent it from fading away, so I thought, correct me if I'm wrong.

Kandyland, I don't know about preventative maintenance as I'm pretty new to this wonderful world of good hair care, but I don't have a problem with a fading or breaking hairline. I think one reason may be because I do my own hair and I don't pull my hair when I braid it. I wear single braids and I am careful to use very little extension hair for each section at my hairline so the weight is minimal. And when I pull my braids back in a ponytail style I almost always don't include my hairline braids. I instead used to let them hang down and curl the end into a bob style. Or I sweep them neatly to the side and over my ear where I rest them, or I pin them up so there's less strain on my hairline. Not sure if that has anything to do with saving my hairline but it hasn't hurt me to do it.

And regarding which are better, cornrows or single braids, like Ngaa, I don't think either is better than the other. It's just a matter of choice. I just like that I can wear more styles with singles. Oh and Ngaa, one way to maintain your cornrows neat for a while is to tie a silk scarf every night. Helps keep them from getting fluffy.
