How do you feel when you wear some kind of style to, let's say work, and then a coworker goes and gets the EXACT same style as you. Does it bother you or are you just flattered?

I hate it and that's why I don't tell people where I get my hair done.

ETA: Yes, that's mean but I slipped up one time and her braids ended up looking better than mines. :look: It was a completely different style but umm...yeah...won't do that again. :lachen:

My stylist is mines :look: (in that sense that I took my time to research and find her...can't just give that info up for free...not unless I move)

That like never happens to me irl:lol:

People are usually amazed at how many looks I can do all by myself and have it come out looking like I got it done at a salon. Then they say they wish they could do that with their hair, or wow I have patience, or sometimes they'll ask me for the hookup.

When its people online that emulate a style I did I love it, it makes me happy I created a new option for them.

C.C. Colton pinned these words: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"...And I would agree with him. I honestly think it's all about how "you", the individual being imitated takes it. For instance, stars get imitated ALL the time- who doesn't want to look like Beyonce, right:rolleyes: (I do love her tho)...Some of us are stars in our own mind, lol- like me:lachen:...so when someone imitates me- as has happened just this week at work: (I have been ps'ing with rollersets and on Monday, my co-worker comes to work, weaved up with a rollerset and she says, "Now we're HAIR twins, lol")- I just smile and take it as a compliment because obviously I'm doing something worthy of imitation...but maybe that's just me being narcassistic...I just feel like I can rock the style the best- cause it's MY style and this is what comes most natural for me (whether we are talking about hair, clothes, etc).

P.S.-Now stalker-crazy Single White Female type is something different-:nono:I feel that I do need to make that disclaimer...

Never happened to me. But I'm the only black woman where I work and in my classes.

I guess I wouldn't care much. Take it as flattery. I might comment like "Oh, I see you decided to try 'XYZ' " and then keep it moving.

I have one coworker that does it all the time and it bothers me. I had a blouse then all of a sudden she had the same blouse, same color, same design. The first time I said, I have a top like that, and she said my sister gave it to me for my birthday.

Same coworker, ok I have that sweater too same color. This is the second time. She said my sister gave it to me for Christmas. I said wow, she sure has my taste.

Same coworker, third time, dang are you buying my wardrobe. I have that top too. She says, oh forreal.

Same coworker, started wearing scarfs as a headband. I was doing it because it looks cute and it hides my edges when I'm stretching with certain styles.

I don't wear any of those three items often because I'm afraid we will be at work with the same outfit on. She works in my department.

I came in one morning and a few ladies were in the office talking, including that coworker. One lady who was talking to the copycat asked me what was in my bag. I told her it was an alternate outfit because since "coworker" buys all of my clothes, I never know what to expect when I get to work. The lady laughed but copycat just looked and said she hates cause we have some of the same clothes. I said no I hate that you go and buy the exact thing I have and we work so closely together. She wont even change it up either, she wears it in the exact same way I do.

My side bun, I was wearing that alldayeveryday to work, the only person who copied me was a friend who had recently made the decision to transition.... I didn't care, I don't have the side bun trademarked/patented.
In college I work a lot of wash n gos that turned into messy buns on the top of my head, I noticed a lot of girls copied that one, but it's cute so who can blame em?

I don't care too much, I am sure I'm not the first do do a style, so I won't be the last.

It doesn't bother me at all

far as clothes, that doesn't bother me either. I typically buy things that are mass produced. It would be nice to inspire someone else as I am by others

I forgot to add hair copycats don't bother me, if it's pretty I'll say so, but when you buy several of my exact outfits....:wallbash:

Hairstyles I don't have an issue with re: "copycats".....clothes I do. :look:
OH my goodness YES.

I had a cousin come up for vacation from down south and she literally went through my entire stiletto/boot/sandal/slingback you name it collection right before my eyes like oh I can wear this for x event or I can wear this for that! Its okay right?!?!? I was like:look: with a fake smile tryna be polite my right eye was twitchin.....I grew up with a brother....I do NOT share my clothes.....that is just a no can do.

After that she turned to me and was like too bad you're a much smaller size then me in clothes cuz I woulda borrowed that too!.......I was like:ohwell::look::nono: NO.

Speaking of people online "emulating your style" I can't find that FreeTress hair you used for your crochet style. You know the pretty coily brown hair
help a sister out? I need the name of the hair
thanks Luv:lachen::grin::yep::lick:

Oh, it's always flattering. I style my own hair, so to know that I did it well enough to make someone else want to duplicate it is a great compliment.

Flattered and irked at the same time. I don't care about people on the boards, but if bugs me IRL. I really am flattered when someone asks "How did you get your hair like that?" unless it's just a wash n go, or "Where do you buy your clothes?" but seriously, I can't reveal all the makings of me! I never share what color I use on my hair IRL, nor do I share where I shop. My response is usually, "Chile, I shop some of everywhere!" I have only certain people that I share info with, and it's more of an exchange of knowledge and online boutiques :look: Now that I think about it, the people I share with IRL are on diff hair boards too

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

That's what I'm tryna see it as. I mean I just have a simple sew-in which everybody has nowadays but a few weeks before I got it (and I didn't tell anyone I was getting it) this lady was saying that she was going to get corn rows and doesn't do the sew ins cause she's scared to and this and that. Well I came w/mine she talked about how pretty it was (even thought it was my hair at first) touched it :nono:, then all of a sudden started askin all these questions like what kinda hair it was, the color, length etc. So she made her appt yesterday (not where I went). It looks okay, we look like individuals not "hair twins". But she did tell me the lady only used two tracks for hers.:ohwell:

I hate the clothes thing too. I have an older sister like that. If I get a purse, she goes and get's just like it, similar, or the bigger version of it etc. We don't wear the same size but I know if we did she would be all up in mine.

Well if it's a unique style then I'll be pissed but if it's just a ordinary style I won't but that doesn't happened to me irl .

I've had that happen at work in recent years a girl tried to immitate my body curl roller set with a weave on a few occasions and it was a mess.

For me its a step by step process. At first no, I will share, don't mind sharing info of where it came from either.

But when it comes to me entering your house and your bathroom counter is identical to mine, and I realise you have gone out and bought every brand of makeup I own even though we are not the same complexion and keep sneaking off to try on my stuff and are constantly asking to borrow my stuff when your stuff is even pricier and better quality it irks me to no end...:wallbash:

Not so much hair though...

When I was younger I use to hate it but now that I'm older "over 21" I look at it as a compliment. People have been copying everything I do, say, wear etc for years I'm finally comfy and flattered by it

It doesnt bother me to much, i wear my hair in braidouts and bantou knot outs and people will say" i really like your hair, how did you do that?" and when i tell them how to do a bantou knot they look at me like im crazy, but they do try to do a braid out and if it doesnt come out right they come to me and say " i tried to do my hair like yours and it looked a mess" and i tell them how to do it again. I have a friend who will not tell people where she gets her hair done because she doesnt want to see people from work at the salon.

If I don't hang with you... that's cool. But if we're together and you want to be my twin in errrr department. That's a problem.

1 friend.. never used to shape her eyebrows. She started to hang with me, and shaped them EXACTLY like mine. Ofcourse, I had no problem with that... it's 2010, what girl doesn't shape eyebrows? Anyway then she called me up and said I HAVE to take her shopping. She wanted to buy a bag (like mine) Jeans (like mine) designer shoes (like mine) I was shocked. Yeah, I was flattered but I had to bite my tongue from saying beaaaaaaaach stop tryna be my twin. But since we have totally diff body shapes (thank the lawwwd) My outfits didn't quite work out for her. I have a booty/hips she doesn't. She said she might buy some butt pads.... Gurl wont stop

ETA: Ohhh... hairstyles don't bother me at all. Infact, a lil copying here and there even with clothes is ok. I just can't stand it when somebody wants to look like you from head to toe!

Hairstyles aren't copyrighted. Any style you are wearing was done by somebody else at some point in time. Just be sure YOU look fly with your hair style and don't worry about people copying you.
