does anyone else have hair that does not ever respond to conditioners (deep and regular) ever?
in order for my hair to be moisturized i have to use a hair lotion.
i've tried just about everything under the sun and i'm weary of trying anything else because i still have so much and money doesn't grow on trees.
my hair is making progress, but i just don't understand what is going on with it. i've never met anyone else with hair as dry :(
i'd love to be able to just wash and condition and be ready to go, without having to rely on lotions.

ors banana conditoner used to work, now it doesn't anymore.
it was also very hard to find a hair lotion, but i found one at last (salerm leave in conditioner) but it leaves white residue on my hair, that ends up looking like dandruff...

My hair cannot accept moisture without protein. For years my hair would not respond to conditioners or deep conditioner treatments. My hair would dry as hard as a rock. The only thing that softened my hair were creams and butters. You'll have to look at my earlier posts to see part of my struggle. Now I can say for sure that if your hair is not accepting wet moisture, it is also not accepting dry moisture. The butters and lotions just coat the hair and make it "feel" moisturized and pliable when it is as dry as a bone under all that product. The first thing that helped me was oil rinses using Castor oil. The other thing that finally helped my hair accept moisture is using weekly protein and reconstructor deep treatments. They help to balance the hairs protein and moisture content and lay down the cuticle. I use Aubrey Organics Glycogen Protein Balancing Conditioner (AO Gpb)- and the affects last about a week. You can feel your hair getting stronger w/each treatment. I alternate w/a pure protein treatment-- Komaza's Protein Treatment every 2-4 weeks and follow-up w/a moisturizing DC (Aubrey Honeysuckle Rose).

That was very helpful.
Did you use the gbp every week until you saw an improvement or did you alternate it with a moisturing dc that you would use mid week OR did you follow the protein with a moisture dc?

@Bublin I use the Ao Gpb weekly. I do the pure protein once a month right now. I always follow pure protein w/a moisture Dc -- AO Hsr. By using the GPB consistently once a week, I saw my hair improve more and more-- and it kept getting stronger.

I think i'll have to buy the AO then...in the UK it's quite expensive at £10.49. I just purchased Aphogee 2 min. I will use that up first.

I've just started doing hot oil pre poos but will incorporate the oil rinses.

Co signing on the protein suggestions. My hair would be a dry, porous, brittle mess if I didn't incorporate monthly protein treatments. My hair prefers heavy protein treatments, but yours may only require medium protein conditioners. I would definitely start with protein and then follow up with moisture... over time your hair should feel better

OP, when was the last time you clarified? The dryness issues could also stem from product build up.

Cosign. This is a suspect if something used to work, but no longer does. Also, the hair may feel moisturized while wet, but dries very dry.

But, I think almost everyone here uses some type of moisturizer after washing & conditioning, so that part isn't unusual. I actually stopped using conditioners after discovering that emulsifiers in conditioners/lotions were building up on me & finding Terressentials mud wash, so now I just prepoo & use oils/butters as a leavein. You could try just using a leavein after prepoo/washing if you don't feel like conditioners aren't doing anything.

Also, make sure your wash routine minimizes dryness. Things like just washing the scalp & letting shampoo run through (only shampooing thorougly when needed), oil rinsing/adding oil to shampoo, etc.

Ditto to what everyone else said. Also to salvage crappy conditioners try adding glycerin, oils and honey to them to make them more moisturizing.

hey guys, sooo sooo sorry for going MIA. school and all

omg! thank you soo soo much for this. i did the komaza hair analysis and she told me the same thing...i just didn't listen

What is your regi?
i wouldn't say i have a reggie, as my routine doesn't have structure. Pretty much i wash my hair with roux shampoo or curls unleashed shampoo once a week or so (sometimes more, sometimes less). i condition with whatever conditioner i have (too many too list them all) and then i moisturize with salerm leave in

My other favorite thing you may want to try! It draws moisture to the hair and seems to trap it there: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=150965
i'll most def check it out, especially since it seems our hair is similar, thanks!

Maybe you haven't found the right deep conditioner yet. My hair really likes AO HSR
sadly i have tried that in the past and nothing good came from it...the GPB wasn't too bad though (meaning it was one of the best amongst the worst), probably would have to be more consistent

since relaxing about a month ago? lol does that count or is that strictly neutralizing?

also, i have noticed that before i last relaxed, i hadn't relaxed in 4 months and my hair was soo dry that it was breaking all over the place, after relaxing and doing the mid protein step that came with the box, my hair was strong and in good shape (except still dry)...there might be something to this protein business.

i'll probably purchase a clarifying shampoo (how often should i use that?)

and follow you guys' advice.

your help is greatly appreciated! :blowkiss:

My hair is the same, but it has taken me to formulate a regieme to help combat dryness.
- adding oil to my relaxer
- deep oiling before washing my hair
- using a shower filter to filter calcium from the water which makes my hair coated and hard
-Washing with sulphate free low ph shampoo
-Avoiding too many cones in conditioners and using conditioners with a low ph
-Moisturising and sealing my hair every night
-Keeping my hair tucked under in a bun during the day
-Upping my iron levels

Hope this helps

I didn't realize you were relaxed. I always assume one is natural by default! I also suggest diluting your shampoo's (in color applicator bottle); shampoo is very drying and harsh on the hair-- so consider sulfate free/natural 'poo's. Also, I co-sign daily moisture and sealing. You need a good hair spritz; good hair lotion; and good sealant---> that way you can do the LCO method of moisture. Lastly, clarifying would be hair suicide for me. If you don't know what you're doing-- do some research first. They strip all moisture from your hair and leave your hair weak and dry. If you do it, be sure to followup w/a moisture DC. What else did Komaza say? I followed all their recommendations, here's my result thread: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=675865

virtuenow thank you for mentioning the ill effects of clarifying as a solution to dry hair. That 'used' to be the trend on here - you got a problem? Clarify!!!

My first question would be:
How much water are you consuming and what kind of water are you using to wash your hair?

Increase your water intake by double is my 1st suggestion. Is your water soft? Hard? Is there much Calcium in the water? If you don't like the taste of pure water, add lemon or liquid stevia. Another trick is to make iced tea. Boil a liter or two of water and place in a pitcher. Add 3-4 flavored tea bags. Add Xylitol or Stevia to the water (These are Natural sweeteners which are not bad for you!) Allow to cool. Serve with ice and drink to your hearts content!

Secondly, if you do not have a shower filter, buy a water filter like EVA Advanced Water Filtering System and use the water from that to wash your hair. Water will change your hair feel forever but be patient.

Once your water is taking care of, vitamins and consumed oils are next on the list of priorities.
I have been taking Mineral Rich which I have to say is doing wonders to my hair and my nails. I've never felt this strongly about a product in a long while. It's the only mineral/vitamin supplement you would need and it's a liquid and tasty, IMHO.

As for oils, a tsp of Grapeseed oil, a tsp of Walnut oil and build up to a Tbsp of Fish oil per day. The above oils have very good antioxidant properties and in the long run, your whole body will thrive with these oils. Being an older woman, my mom noticed the difference by consuming the G and W oil after a month. Her hair was very soft, luscious and very manageable. I am used to taking Fish oil and my hair is usually much stronger and shiny with the fish oil. I really makes a difference to my head of hair when I take the oils or leave them. Once again, all need to build up in your body.

In terms of your regimen, do you prepoo with an oil and good quality conditioner? What do you shampoo with? As for conditioner -it's probably working but the drying method can either work with you or against? What conditioners are you using? What leave in and M&S method are you using?

Update: I've just noticed some of your answers. As you mention, you don't really have a regimen and seem to be using 'what's there.' Uh hmm.

Think you can learn a few things from her. What I would suggest is that you start by investing in a steamer and a hard hat bonnet. Her most up to date Wash Day will give you some of the best products for you to purchase and work with. She would have type 4 hair and I'd say many of the products she mentions are very good. I've tried other girls products with type 4 like Motions, Giovanni, Tresemme, Redken, you name it! They may work for you however personally, Silk Dreams, Hairitage & Darcy Botanicals seem to have some pretty good products!
