Conspiracy against long hair

Jesus, I Trust In You!
I don't watch tv but this afternoon my parents have the tv on and the show 'style court' is on. Every person brought to the court had her hair cut in one form or the other and what got me what the saying that long hair wasn't good looking (not the stylist words verbatim but very very close to it) and he also said that the ends which were 2-3yrs old were so dry and had to go. I was like, wouldn't it be better to teach the lady how to condition the hair rather than veto(sp?) chopping. Does she have to keep chopping off 6-7 inches of hair all the time to have healthy hair?
Talk about scissor happy stylists

I feel the same what about these shows. Iwas watching Ambush Makeover and they said something very similar about long hair - I was shocked.

They will cut someones hair who's had long hair allll their life and I know they aren't teaching her how to deal with it. It's got to be a shock to have short hair if your fall back styles are buns or ponytails. But they are quick to cut off 3 or 4 inches. Sheesh

These shows irritate me, too. If your hair is long, you can be assured they will cut it shoulder length or shorter.

If your hair is in any way wavy or curly, they will straighten it.

Makes me so mad! Why not teach people how to work with what they have? Nothing is wrong showing them how to minimize frizz if they have wavy/curly hair or to trim an inch or two off to get rid of damage.

It's so irritating!

IMO, Most stylist love to cut hair, and especially on those makeover shows, it's like, something is wrong with simply "styling" the long hair...

. IMO, no matter how gorgeous and sheek and short cut style looks, NOTHING turns heads like a beautiful, healthy head of long flowing hair.

I think practically every makeover type show/episode of a show where the person had long hair, the stylists cut the hair shorter. A lot of times the person didn't look better with short hair, they could have just styled the long hair differently. I think for the purposes of a makeover they want to show a dramatic difference so they cut the hair shorter.

Short isn't dramatic, its totally uncalled for. If they are really as much a professional as they would want us to believe, then they'd be able to whip out something truly extraordinary with what the person has. We all know how long it takes to grow 2-3 inches and then someone just snips it off like that without batting an eyelid?
I'd love to see someone refuse to have a hair cut on one of those shows. Then we'd know the stylists from the scissor-crazy-meddlers.

I was saying the same thing last week.

I don't think I've seen one makeover show where "what the person needed" wasn't a haircut! And it seems like whenever the person who's getting the makeover is black, they want to throw a weave or a wig on their head!?!

I don't like the makeover show hair do's cuz they all look the same to me!

The cut is always short with those stupid wispy angled bangs...it's always blow dried straight....usually higlighted really subtle..etc.

The worse part is they always leave these women with hairstyles that cost a fortune to maintain. The hair needs to be trimmed constantly to keep the shape....the highlights need touching up every 6 weeks...and most women aren't as good with a hairdryer as a stylist is so you can't even duplicate the look at home.

This also creates a huge problem for sisters in particular...when they put that weave in that needs to be re-done and it cost a fortune...or if it's our own hair we try to keep it up at home and end up looking worse than before the makeover cuz we killed it with the dryer and curling iron trying to keep up the look.

Those shows are actually a no-no for someone who wants healthy hair over "styled" hair.

I agree with practically everything you've said! It's so true. They create these high maintenance hair styles and you know the person won't be able to duplicate it at home. What a shame.

Nuthing gets my goat more than some sylist commenting "you have long hair! You should let me cut it!" or "Wow, your hair is growing! So, can I "trim" it?" My old hairdresser NEVER let me keep my hair long! Every time I came in there with it past my shoulders she'd say it needed a trim bad and cut it off to where it barely touched the bottom of my neck! Then have the nerve to talk about how as long as I kept up the trims it would be down my back! It was down my back alright...and in the chair and on the floor in 2-3 inch chunks...

I was selected for a makeover years ago for a national magazine. I had long hair and they wanted to cut it short. I refused to have my hair cut drastically and the magazine decided not to use me in the article. They did give me a free hair styling session at Vidal Sasson (sp) in Beverly Hills. When I decided to take them up on it some time later, the first indication that I was in the wrong place was that they started to "trim" my natural hair while it was wet! I got out of there in a hurry!!

Good for you Aerie. One thing I hate about the makeover shows is that I think many times you have to agree to let them do whatever look they want. I would so NOT be comfortable with that. You can wash makeup off, eyebrows will grow back in a few weeks, you can throw the clothes away, but your hair will take years to recover from a bad haircut.

It's like these shows are soooo concerned with making a dramatic difference for their image, they dont really care about the person. It's about ratings.

Humorously put...and well said... sadly true. I think this is why my hair isn't any longer than it is. I know I am cutting out damage from a couple of years ago...but Man, can a sister retain some length from month to month ??? :-/

This erritates me also.

I remember on Ricky Lake when this lady had long beautiful hair (wasit length)and it was so healthy. Her family insisted that she get a makeover and the Hairstylist chopped her hair off all the way to ear length
shocked.gif
. When she saw herself in the mirror the lady began to cry and kept saying how beautiful her hair was and asked why did the beautician cut so MUCH. Her family's reaction was "It looks great, NOW you look like a lovely young lady." Even though everyone was so happy for her, you could tell the expression on her face that she was not pleased.

Every makeover show tha I have seen...a woman with long hair has had their hair cut very short. I do not watch tv either, but back when I was watching it a whole lot, I noticed that about makeover shows. They are making women look more and more like guys...all for a "fashion statement" or whatever. Short hair is "in" for a lot of people. I notice with a lot of elderl women (dont matter what race)..they all chop off their hair and wear it short in curls. My mother choped off all her hair some years ago and keeps it very short....she says that women her age dont look good with long hair. When I am old....dont care how crusty and grey I am, I will be wearing my naturally grey (or white..whatever it becomes) hair as long as I can and I wont put no color in it either. Don't care if I look like an albino Indian with long hair...cuz a woman's hair is her glory and I will let my dignity shine through my crusty old, looong hair
smile.gif

Maybe there's a conspiracy against long hair is because it's associated with femininity, which some(?) woman don't like because they think it means mean being submissive or something. I was reading this hair magazine and I read an article where this guy said he loved women with short hair because it made them look "strong and powerful." I'd be cautious around guys like that.

these shows are strictly about the before and after pictures... i would love to see a show where they make subtle changes that make a HUGE difference.

Carlie, ain't that the truth! I was watching 'How Do I Look' and this black lady had a GORGEOUS 'fro! You know the first thing they did was throw a weave in it. Her natural hair looked so good with the outfits that she picked out, but the weave didn't fly at all.

I agree with what you said. I think these shows are chop happy because cutting someones hair is the quickest way to may a drastic change in their appearence. Then they slap some makeup on them.

All I know is that if I were on one of those shows and someone came at me with cutting shears.....the fight would be on!

And ya know I would win!

As beautiful as long hair is, you would think they would figure out a way to make a person look dramatically fabulous with it!

That is such a shame. I know someone who has this bootleg "stylist" who is always doing the same thing. She has really durable hair that grows fast, but her stylist is always hacking it away so it never sees below shoulder length. When I asked her why she lets the stylist continually cut her hair, she told me that the stylist said she likes to see it even and well trimmed. I left it at that.....
