OP did you also mean how to identify what they are in hair products, their purpose, and why ppl are getting rid of them?

If so, I know I had to search beyond LHCF for some of the answers but cone is short for silicone. They typically end in -one or -xane. They form a barrier around the hair preventing moisture loss. I think they also give the appearance of a smoother hair cuticle. Some are water soluble and others have to be washed out with a sulfate shampoo.
I stopped using most products with lots of cones bc I noticed that they were also preventing moisture from getting into my hair.

They aren't a problem for some ladies as long as they clarify once a month. I hope that helped. I would still do a search just in case I left something out or misquoted some info.

Must you clarify to rid your hair of cones? Can regular poo or c/w also work ro rid hair of cones? I've used cones and my hair within the last couple of weeks and my hair seems to be doing pretty good but my ends can never seem to get enough to drink -- they always seem coarse and thirsty. Wonder if this is from cone use?

IMO and from what I've read, any sulfate shampoo is enough to get rid of the cones. Only problem is, most moisturizing sulfate poos have cones in them. But if you don't have a problem with it, then you can just use a regular sulfate poo. If you want to get rid of all the product and you don't want anything left on your hair, then its best to use a clarifying poo or any Vo5 or Suave shampoo since those don't have cones in them. I haven't clarified at all this year and my hair is fine. But I use a sulfate shampoo twice a month.
