Thanks again to everyone for their patience in answering my questions. /images/graemlins/smile.gif I often feel a bit uneasy asking questions relating to hair. My hair dressor puts her products in unmarked bottles and hides them under a curtain. She really avoids my questions too. Most hair dressors or some sistas that I know, act like I am trying to break into Fort Knox when I ask a hair question. I believe I need to go somewhere else. I am just so tired of switching. But here is my last question... Nita, or any one else who may know, could you please explain the braiding method for drying hair with out heat?? My hair is so dry I really am trying to keep heat off from it. I know the wet set is a set that I can use now, with magnetic rollers of course-thanks to you. Thank you kindly.

I know I'm not Nita, but I just wanted to tell you that your hairstylist is really crazy! She must really want you to be dependent on her for your hair needs and knowledge. I'm not sure what braiding method you mean, but here's two: first you can braid damp hair and put perm rods or small rollers on the end to do a "braid out". After your hair dries you then undo the braids & have a crinkly/curly look. You can do this by sectioning your hair like cornrows, doing two french braids or just four large braided sections.

Compassion, you are definately in the right place for hair questions. We love those!! Ladies feel free to chime in with those answers for Compassion!!

First of all, it may be time to find a new hairdresser - especially since this one is so adamant about not answering your questions. I would suggest "interviewing" several about the care of your hair before choosing one the next time.

Second, since your hair is dry - I would suggest eliminating all heat. Except for maybe after a wet set.

Third, develop a hair regimen. Find products that work for your hair, develop a schedule for shampooing/conditioning, etc. This will take some time. Think moisture. Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners and a good protein conditioner at least once a month. Review old post by doing a search and read up on the subject. Also, ask plenty of questions /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Okay, now to answer your question finally /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Actually there are several ways, you will have to experiment with them.

I'm like really low maintenance. So, I like to shampoo, condition and plait my hair in braids. I tuck the ends into the base of the braid. This gives me a nice textured look on comb out. You have the option of rolling the ends on curlers or leaving them straight - like regular braids. When dry, I unbraid and spray my scalp with a moisturizer, massage in and pin up in a french roll, I do this every three days.

Or you can twist your hair going back from your forehead - like cornrows. Twist all the way to the ends of the hair, then take the ends and wrap them around themselves to secure them in a bantu knot.

Or you can make regular twist, like when you were a kid and secure the ends in the base of the twist or wrap the twist around into a bantu knot. This will give you a nice wavy look with curls at the ends.

Always add a moisturizing conditioner and a little natural oil prior to doing this and afterwards when you take them down finger comb the hair as not to disturb the texture if you want to wear out. If you comb, it will get fluffy (sp), I like mine fluffy because it make my hair look thicker. Also you may experience frizzy ends and all depending on the texture of your hair it may look more natural then relaxed. Fortunately, I like the natural look. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif Where my hairdresser's hair looks curled and her ends don't look frizzy.


But, I don't wear my hair down often especially in the winter. I find it easier to keep pinned up in a roll, a twist, or a french braid. Something that I can maintain daily with a little moisturizer, a quick comb and I'm gone. These have gone over well in my office. I'm very conservative and they are classic looks.

All these will take practice. Also, learn to wet set - somewhere on this site are some instructions with links to pictures.

YES! Ms Kenesha, that is what I meant. The "braid out." Bless your heart, thanks! Yes Gurl, my hair dressor is really..ah...different. She does not even put conditioner in my hair! Oh, she does when I am getting a relaxer, but not during my weekly visits. But she puts me in the bowl, washes and has me up with a towel. The stylist in the bowl next to us is still washing and conditioning when my stylist is rolling my hair. /images/graemlins/frown.gif I knew that was not right! I am just learning now. At home though, I have ALWAYS used conditioner (Aphogee). My mother taught me that. I am in a city though where there are not very many GOOD hairdressors. Tomorrow I go to her for a wash and set $30. I think I may stop going eventually, my hair is becoming see through. She trims it almost EVERY time I go. My boyfriend likes the way she styles my hair, so he pays for it. He told me if he ever ran out of money, that I need to do what I could do keep going to her-even ROB A BANK. LOL She can lay some hair though, but maintenance is not her bag. My boyfriend does not understand about conditioning and stuff though I believe. But his hair is flowing! He has nice, neat, sexy dreds! Anyway, I appreciate you!

Thank you Nita!! You left no stone unturned. LOL Boy, you (and Kenesha) two have really given me some ideas to play around with. Like I said before, my beau has dreds. I have been thinking about a style that will make my hair look more natural. I believe you have given me the tools I need to do it! You are so very welcome!! I like dreds too, but I can't go there right now.

Another style I forgot to mention from a braid out with relaxed hair is the afro puff. This has been the only way I've worn my hair out for a day - without it being wet set. I use a shoestring that has been dipped in jerri curl juice. I tie it around my head, pull it into place and secure. This is cute too. I just haven't figured out how to maintain it for more then a day. And...I wear it for fun, not to work...
