To all the lovely ladies who apply color to their hair: permanent, semipermanent with peroxide..... I imagine that one of your main focuses is hair health. I would love to hear what you are doing to maintain your hair's health since you have applied color to your hair. Also, if you wouldn't mind sharing, I'd also like to know what brand and color you use or have used with great success in the past (or have used with horrible results).

Thanks a lot!

Hi Daviine!

I have to use color to keep the gray toned down in my hair. I used to use semi-perms (s-p) without any peroxide but basically they were a pain, because of the frequency with which I had to use them. They are nice to use in the summer, however, because they tend to just coat the hair and the hair that comes in gray (actually, pure white) appears highlighted by whatever color is left by the dye. I am not ready for the gray hair right now. I find the best product for me is Radiance by Clairol, an s-p. I use Natural Dark Brown (2n) or Black. It covers the gray best for me, and my hair is always shiny and healthy-looking after use. I have not noticed any damage from using this color. With Natural Instincts, my hair was definitely dry.
I was using the color about once every 6 weeks, but have found myself having to backup to about every month (4-weeks) because of the faster growth I am experiencing, thus more gray roots popping in. I attribute this to MSM. I started using the powder product about two and a half weeks ago. I colored my hair exactly 2 weeks ago and already have gray roots showing up! My regimen has simplified to the following steps:

Perm every 7-8 weeks- Used to be every 5 without fail (MSM!).
Color roots when needed, approximately 4-6 weeks.

Shampoo once a week (more in summer) using Keracare
Hydrating Detangling Shampoo or Nexxus Therappe.

Condition with Nexxus Humectress or GPB (today, I am trying L'Oreal Mermaid Treatment and GPB mixed together).

After shampoo, I mix Keracare Silken Seal, a few drops of Kemi Oyl, and Black and Sassy Wrap Lotion (love it, love it, love it!) into my hair, wrap and dry under a hood dryer.

Through the week, I apply Surge at night to roots only, then mix UBH Lotion Creme Moisturizer and Kemi Oyl into my palm then into hair and wrap at night and sleep with a silk scarf coverd by a satin cap.

Daily in morning, I mix Elasta QP Feels Like Silk and A'Sante Polishing and Styling Gel (neither has alchol) into my palms and use to smooth my hair for my phony-ponytail. I use very small amounts of each...dots really. I am hoarding the A'Sante. I can't find it anymore, and it really is a great product!

My hair has a rich sheen and has grown a bunch since I started this. I would guess that I have two more inches since November. Not a ton of growth by some standards, but I am retaining what I do grow. My hair is now starting it's journey below the shoulders and I am thrilled.

I also take Biotin and a multi-vitamin in addition to the MSM. I believe the MSM is changing the texture of my hair. For reference: I am 4a/3c fine, where originally, I believe I was a 4a fine. Who knows what the heck kind of hair they have? I think that since I have been paying attention and moisturizing very carefully, that my hair is just wonderful. It is much stronger,(I go by the strand test...take a strand and pull it until it snaps). Mine is strong and resilient.

Ask me what I thought a year ago...

Caramelle---I couldn't think of another way to reword it...I guess it was just too early....

Does the Radiance have peroxide in it? Do you think it was the peroxide in the Natural Instincts that made your hair dry?

I use Clairol Textures & Tones (permanent color) in "Bronze". I've been using it for about a year, and it has been working out SO well for me!! In the past, I've tried just about every brand of haircolor there is, and I've found that the T&T is the least damaging (for me) of all the permanent colors I've used. When I used to use semi-perm colors, they never caused my hair any damage.

My regimen is this: (I won't include the products I use, cuz I switch up A LOT - I'm trying to use up my current stash!!

)

Shampoo every weekend, Hot Oil twice a month, ACV rinses occasionally, Creamy protein just about every week (unless my hair seems to be getting brittle), Deep condition with heat after every shampoo.

I rollerset every other weekend. The weekend in between that, I air-dry, either doing a twist-out, or just drying in a ponytail, or loose.

In between washes, I make sure to keep my hair moisturized with UBH Oil Moisturizer Lotion and/or some type of oil or serum.

During the summer months, I do one or two conditioner washes during the week in addition to my weekend shampoos.

That's it!!

Is there anyone who washes their hair more frequently that uses perm color or would it be ok to just conditioner wash with a conditioner for colored hair?
