I (permanently) dye my hair black but I don't touch up the roots like normal, I dye all of my hair every 6 months. So far I've done this 3 times (July '11, Feb '12, and Aug '12) and I haven't noticed any ill effects but I'm wondering if this will hurt my hair in the long run? I deep condition weekly, hardcore protein monthly, and I stay on top of my moisturizing.

It really depends on your hair, since you are natural it may be less damaging, but I would really stay on top of conditioning treatments. I normally do not use permanent color on clients with dark hair who wish to remain near that level, a demi-permanent or even a semi-permanent does the job. However, in cases where you are covering a lot of grey a permanent may be necessary. I would use permanent color the first go around, and then only use permanent on roots for touch ups, to re-freshen the previous colored hair I will use a semi or demi. In some occasions I will use permanent color on the length for the last 10 minutes or so.

charmtreese, I have thought about just processing the grown out hair for the full 20 minutes and then hitting the previously colored during the last 10 minutes, just to be safe. Thanks for your reply!

Yeah, Permanent can be damaging because most often it contains ammonia. I use the Ion Demi permanent from Sally's and it's good stuff. Really gently. But you do have to touch up often. At least I do because of how my grays grow in...
