With the weather around here starting to cool off I'm trying to get my winter regimen together. I've heard great things about pure coconut oil but I've only seen the hard form of it. Is that the way you all are buying it? then you just melt it down to use it? i'm trying to keep things as simple as possible but if thats what i gotta do, I'll do it. Any alternative options? TIA

I don't use it personally, but my friend uses the hard coconut oil on her hair, and it works amazing for her!

When I purchased it it was a solid, but now that I have it in my house it's constantly in a liquid form b/c of the temp-and it's not that hot in my house.

ooh, thats good to know! my DH keeps it like a freakin' sauna in here during the winter so it should stay a good consistency.

Im glad you asked this because I was actually out looking for pure coconut oil today, and the only thing I found was the hard one from NOW. So I guess I should go ahead and buy it, huh? But Loveya4ever (the young lady with the waist length hair on BHM) said that she bought some from Walmart in the cooking oil aisle for like $3.00. So I dunno...

Solid coconut oil should melt very easily in your hands when you rub them together.

Shunta.....I have the coconut oil you're talking about from Wal-Mart but that kind has been refined. I'm not sure if it has all the benefits that un-refined coconut oil has. I know it dosen't have a smell at all but the un-refined kind smells like coconuts.

Thanks, Pokahontas!:D Im going back tomorrow to get the hard form.

I buy it in the oil form. Not sure if its still "pure" or not.

Boy, i love how that stuff smells! Mmmmm!!!!

I get the unrefined version from the vitamin shop for about $6. It melts very easily in my hands when I rub them together.

so i guess all that re-heating over and over isnt breaking down the molecules in a bad way? Also, does coconut oil spoil after a certain amount of time?

Unrefined coconut oil will melt easily in your hands. But be careful not to put too much in if it gets really cold, because it will harden again (not visibly, but you may feel the difference).

btw, coconut oil is GREAT!

I buy mine from a health food store. Even when it begins to solidify, I'm able to scoop it out and rub it together in my hands. It melts very easily, but due to the temperature in my house, it's usually fairly liquid-like.

Wow!
I get mine from Vitamin World and that was 11 dollars for 16 oz!!

I do this too. Coconut Oil does wonders for my hair. Great for the scalp, ends, and adds a little bling when I use it as a leave in.

Mine is solid as we speak but is refined. I can scoop some out for my hair, then add some to the pan for my pork chops or popcorn:) I paid $2.99 for 12 oz and it works wonders for the hair - shine and softness. It's great to put a lot on the night before a wash and cover with a plastic cap.

I plan to do an overnight oiling (that's what the girls on LHC call it!) at least 2x a month!

I buy an excellent quality from my local supermarket. The name is Spectrum Naturals. It's organic, expeller pressed and unrefined. I found it in the isle with the rest of the oils when shopping for something else (SCORE!!! :weird: ).

Now that the weather is cool here, it's hardend, but I just scoop out a chunk with my finger and it melts easily in my hands. It's very light with a very light scent and the BLING it gives my hair is better than anything I've ever used. It also helps detangle nicely.

It even gives a hair usage tip on the label!

This is now a permenant staple item for me.

I've tried several brands, first Spectrum, which was ok, but then I found Garden of Life Coconut Oil which is really smooth and creamy. It was a few dollars more but worth it. I like to "oil" the length of my hair and and pin it up for about 4 hours (or overnight) before shampooing. It works wonders!

Here's the link for Garden of Life, but you can find it at most health food stores:

This sounds heavenly, I think I will try an overnight oiling too! That's funny, I had never really heard that term before, lately I've been reading up on Indian hair secrets and "overnight oiling" is often mentioned. Hmmm... another hair adventure to try.

I usually buy Natures Way EFA Gold coconut oil at whole foods. Pretty great because its usually on sale and it does taste good (its food grade) I figure if I can get a couple of uses out of it, its all good:D

I got mine in London in the solid unrefined form. I just rub my hands together and apply it on my ends.

I hate that it doesn't smell though but other than that so far so good....

It has a VERY long shelf life. Of some years, as long as it's un adulterated and kept sealed up. Unrefined coconut oil is great stuff, it works with your skins natural juices to creat an anti-fungal agent that kills candida, which is suspected of causing skin problems, scalp problems and internal issues. It's yummy to eat a spoon of it and good for you!

I just bought some from www.fromnaturewithlove.com and didn't realize that it didn't have the scent until I opened the bottle. I came across another site that sells it while on another hair board and this one is the unrefined one.

Virgin Coconut Oil - Certified Organic from Tropical Traditions - http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/virgin_coconut_oil.htm

I'm glad I read through this thread because I didn't know the oil could solidify while in your hair.

I buy mine from Earthfare, it lasts a really long time. I scoop it out with a spoon put it in a small bowl with jojoba oil and microwave. I add 5 drops of each of the following essential oils: Peppermint, Lavendar, Rosemary, Grapefruit, Ylang Ylang, and Tea tree. I use this for my scalp massage when I deep condition and I use the remainder on my scalp and ends.

It smells soooo good too!!!

Oh yeah and coconut oil is GREAT for frying pancakes!!!:D

I usually just buy mine from the indian store. Its all natural and very inexpensive and my hair is always soft.
